All Time Title Tracks

Post by verb_to_trust »

Title tracks can come off as lazy when they recycle the name of the album into a song title. Then again, there are times where a song so completely sums up the essence of a record that giving it title track status is the only choice.

When I think of title tracks, Astral Weeks by Van Morrison has to be at the top of the list:

What are some of your favorites?

"29" by Ryan Adams is an example of a title track that doesn't hit. How can a song that so blatantly rips off Truckin by GD garner title track status:

https://youtu.be/ujKXOpve57A

The emotional centerpiece of 29 is Strawberry Wine unquestionably.

Before you get old
And you can't break out of it
My old friend
Cause it's getting winter
And if you want any flowers
You better get your seeds in

https://youtu.be/mn_d34Gzj10

I suppose you can't really call the record Strawberry Wine though.

I wonder what a track on Nevermind called Nevermind would have sounded like?

I will say, the song Summerteeth never really stood out much but this new Slow Rhodes version highlights some of the depth it has as a tune.

5150 is Van Hagar's best song and Wildflowers is an ace that also serves as track one. Great picks!

Fire Garden Suite is a 10 minute romp on Steve Vai's 1996 album Fire Garden. Steve's a total weirdo guitar instrumentalist genius who has always been a hero of mine.

The correct way to listen to the song is to also include Bangkok, which comes immediately before though. You have to start and end the 12 minutes by hearing the bees buzzing, it ties it all together.
