Just to reiterate an earlier post - and completely contradicting my comments about the UK music press - the reviews editor of Q magazine has tweeted that he rates LB amongst the best albums of the year so far. So looks like there will be a very positive review of the album in next month's Q.

Maybe it all depends on how you respond to cheese.

But because he reads Swallowed Whole as like another Backspacer cut, I'm not entirely sure I agree with him about anything else sounding like Backspacer, because that one really doesn't. Into The Wild is a better comparison.

Q reviewer LOVES the title track. So that already puts him at loggerheads with this latest review, which was lukewarm about it.

I suspect that overall the reviews will pretty much reflect how the fanbase will react to it - some will love it, some will hate it, most will think it's a mixed bag.

It sounds like this is one of their more sonically varied records in a while, at least in terms of the style of songs, and one of the least aggressive PJ records in a while, which is usually one of the easier emotions to grab onto right away, especially with only a few listens (or even just one in a public place) before a review.

Again, reviews from things like listening parties are really just useful for giving you a feel for what a song might sound like. We've had 3 so far, and all have tracks the reviewers liked and were generally positive.

Mmmm don't think so. Unless it's so subtle I've never picked up on it. To the best of my knowledge, PJ are violin-less up to this point. Post Future Days, however, they will be fully violined up. Album 11 will basically be Dexys Midnight Runners.

For some reason after reading a couple of these Sirens reviews that indicate its cheesiness and/or 80's ballad I'm expecting it sound exactly like When I See You Smile and John Waite doing the background vocals.

Anyhow, it worries me a little that the cheesiness is so apparent.

Yeah they didnt even go for heartwrenching or beautiful or any of the words that can usually be taken as codewords for cheesy. Just cheesy straight up.

I was reactive, team. It's not a bad review. I just find London to be full of pretentious press, and that "Oh dear" kind of pissed me off. On the bright side, I've heard the song it was referring to and that wasn't my thought, so whatever. I just think the UK has moved on from Pearl Jam. Like the reviewer said, whenever they have a new album out it's like 'Oh, Pearl Jam! I remember them! They have a new album? When?'

Parting Ways is cello. Totally different kettle of fish. Cellos fekking rock. In the case of Therapy? (who actually had a cellist in the band) quite literally.

"Just Breathe" had strings, which isn't saying much, but so does "Parting Ways" (not Around the Bend, that has piano).

It sounds like it is an excessive song. If it pulls back at just the right moment, or carries you with it, it's great. If it doesn't then you can dismiss it. Either way it is cheesy. It's just a question of whether or not you care.

Stairway to Heaven is a cheesy song. It's still pretty great.

those first two songs are horrible. I like eternal flame.

If someone doesn't like it they'll call it a bon jovi song or dad rock because it is the most effective way to dismiss it and those who like it
