A xylophone? I'm sold now.harmless wrote:It's a Mike song, so the solo is forgiveable for me because he's a big cheeseball.sward wrote:harmless wrote:The production sounds very Ten, it's just that the chords don't.
Matt's drums sound like Dave Krusen's.
I was just thinking about how the production sounds like Ten.
Imagine if this song was on Ten? hahha
I think a lot of Ed's work on soundtracks and such has given way to songs like these. And I'm not complaining, I think the songs amazing other than the production and solo. There have been times in PJ's past where I'll hear a song deplete of any true melody and think..man Ed...just give into the song and sing your little heart out goddamit. Well he does here and I think its awesome. Refreshing that there was no holding back.
Still..the solo...eek.
But if this song had been on Binaural, it would've been a hell of a lot more paired back. On Ten? Probably not.
Guys, there's a xylophone on this.

Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
Sounds almost like a modern country song and that's not to totally condemn it. It's probably one of the better slow tunes they've had for awhile, but it's had virtually not competition.
Judging from what I've heard so far, it sounds like they put an effort into putting more interesting changes in the new stuff. The chorus in this one kinda comes out of nowhere and surprised me in a good way. This one's probably my least favorite of the new tunes and it's better than almost every tune on Backspacer.
That delay setting in the solo is ridiculous. With basically no atmosphere whatsoever a sound like that sticks out like a sore thumb in a very bad way. It works on an album like Binaural or that one tune from the Mad Season reissue where it kinda gets lost in a wash of reverb, but here it's pretty ill advised.
It's about a minute or 2 too long. Maybe I wouldn't feel that way if Mike didn't totally blow the solo.
I don't see this being some big monster hit. The best PJ can hope for at this stage is the random fluke hit like Last Kiss or Just Breathe. For the most part, new PJ haters are gonna hate it and the dickriders are gonna spooge all over it.
Whatever reviewer said that kinda right when he talked about EV sounding different than anything before. Listening through the tune first time reminded me of the first time I heard Maynard opening up The Pot.

Before this i always would have told you get, but somehow my mind didn't entertain the possibility of eddie singing over early 2000's jennifer lopez rom com shit. This is the song that comes on during an passionate makeout scene in the rain when they realise they cant live without eachother.harmless wrote:I think my view is fairly well-known that for me, PJ has been just Ed (and Jeff, I guess) since Dave A. left. You know what i think it is? They have the tendency to sound sort of like the parodied music on sitcoms and similar when they do things like this. Like when they write songs purposely for the show and it sounds like a really bad version of rock or blues or whatever. Sirens and LTRB fall in this category for me. And it's the song writing not anything else. A weak riff that sounds like a famous one with 2 notes changed to make it a little different if it makes sense. It's music theory at work because there isn't much creativity and artistry.McParadigm wrote:Mine wrote:absolutelyharmless wrote: Overall, whether you like it or not, I feel as if they're making a bigger statement with this album than they did on Backspacer.I can't stress enough how confused the combination of these two truths is making me.McParadigm wrote:In every way but lyrically, this song has more in common with other artists than it does with 1991-2006 Pearl Jam.
Up to this point i think LB will be a pleasant listen but it has the serious risk of age poorly.

And well..fuck it. I love the album already and I still haven't heard a snippet of 85% of the songs I was looking forward to hearing.

Is it a bad sign that a couple of the times I've listened songs by 3 Doors Down and Puddle of Mudd are what followed.\?

The solo starts strong like it's going to mimic a siren sound - which would have been interesting - but then it devolves into a bad cover of Bed of Roses. That said, I like the song more with each listen...
