I've already had a friend text me he'd vote for Biden if Trump slammed through the appointment.McParadigm wrote:Honestly the worst move Trump could make would be to fill the seat before November. Doing so motivates the Democratic base even further to get out the vote, decreases the need for conservatives to hang onto him (what with having gotten their conservative court and all), and will absolutely blow up moderate Dem support for expanding the court.
Waiting until after the election is his safest option. So I assume he’ll nominate someone tomorrow.

Trump will nominate. McConnell will see that it happens.
The (conservative) people on the fence about Trump will vote for him because he put a hardcore conservative judge on the courts.
Democracy = dead.

Pick One:
1) this is their chance to energize the base by appointing Ted Nugent
2) this is their chance to win back the suburbs by appointing some suburban white bitch
3) this is their chance to suppress the black vote by appointing Richard Spencer
4) this is their chance to seal the deal on a new Apprentice by appointing Ivanka Trump

This is absolutely true; turning the election into a choice on who gets to fill the seat as opposed to a referendum on him is the best chance he's been given to turn the election in his favor. I can't imagine he'll take it; the potential for lib ownage is far too high.McParadigm wrote:Honestly the worst move Trump could make would be to fill the seat before November. There is a breed of conservative that badly wants a conservative court, but dislikes or is low on support for Trumpism. A potential nomination is leverage for getting their vote. A completed nomination is over with and done, so they don’t need him.Strat wrote:I need someone to dumb this down for me. I dont see it this way. Re: The Supreme Court
i think legal contests are already their plan A, after voter suppression
but they are running out of money
this appointment is the GOP's last hope for any influence for the next 4 years if the senate flips blue
they have to take it

Re: The Supreme Court
I actually think that McConnells statement tonight was intended to put a bit of pressure on Trump.
This will be an unpopular move either way, but it will hurt the party with the types of voters they eventually need to win back a whole lot more if they do it after fully losing an election.
Donald Trump doesn’t care about that. But Mitch McConnell does.

Re: The Supreme Court
If SCOTUS appointments matter that much to those voters then why wouldn't they keep trump in office just in case? It's not as if they aren't all corpses living through a pandemic. If clarence Thomas dropped dead in a month, would it shock anyone?McParadigm wrote:There is a breed of conservative that badly wants a conservative court, but dislikes or is low on support for Trumpism. Re: The Supreme Court
A lot of conservatives likely held their noses in 2016 so a Republican president could fill Scalia's seat; he could just recreate that here. But again, I don't see anyway he does that, so we're either heading for Trump term 2 or a packed court.

Re: The Supreme Court
With one more vote on the court you have a 5-seat majority that's not just leaning right, but leaning pretty far right. If Trump fills the seat, for example, they could overturn Roe v. Wade even if Roberts opposed it.verb_to_trust wrote:If SCOTUS appointments matter that much to those voters then why wouldn't they keep trump in office just in case? Re: The Supreme Court
So best case scenario is trump stacks the supreme court (with the potential for having enough votes to overturn roe v wade) but trump loses the election and the dems stack the lower courts?McParadigm wrote:Noah Rothmans?
