Time to use their own words against them. A friend of mine compiled this:

2016, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas): “It has been 80 years since a Supreme Court vacancy was nominated and confirmed in an election year. There is a long tradition that you don’t do this in an election year.”
2018, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.): “If an opening comes in the last year of President Trump’s term, and the primary process has started, we’ll wait to the next election.”
2016, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.): “I don’t think we should be moving on a nominee in the last year of this president’s term - I would say that if it was a Republican president.”
2016, Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.): “The very balance of our nation’s highest court is in serious jeopardy. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I will do everything in my power to encourage the president and Senate leadership not to start this process until we hear from the American people.”

This wouldn’t be unusual. It is common practice for the Senate to stop acting on lifetime appointments during the last year of a presidential term, and it’s been nearly 80 years since any president was permitted to immediately fill a vacancy that arose in a presidential election year.”

for real though, hopefully this is a wake up call to the other liberal justices. if you get the 'big picture', you need to pass the torch while you are alive and have the opportunity to do so. instead now Scott Baio will be voting on Roe v. Wade 2. all those hours of arguments and toil and fancy sentences don't matter, if you die in the seat and a money launderer is president. he gets to replace you with someone who replaces your fancy sentences with stupid sentences. game is over. you lose

pretty sure that Colins and Murkowski saying they won't vote on the opening is just bc the GOP knows there aren't 2 other senators to vote no, so those two get the OK act like they don't want it and thus improve their chances to get re-elected and thus further the power of the GOP

I feel like Republicans are going scorched Earth here. They're chances in November weren't great. If they wait and lose, they get no Justice. If they surge forward, it might make them unpopular, and they may lose in November, but at least they get a Justice.

If they fail at getting a Justice AND lose in November, we'll they'll still only be down 2 or 3 seats worse than they would have been had they done nothing.

Maybe pushing forward excites the base and they win in November, then they get a Justice, a President, and the Senate.

It's not a bad gamble.

The thing is, an uninspired base is the only problem they DONT have right now. Their problem is that the current numbers are the result of a fired up base and a small spattering of moderate remainers. Reacquiring some moderates (especially in the burbs) is their only hope...and moderates aren’t moved much either way by Supreme Court fights.

As a democract, I have to say, it sucks but it is what it is. If they had won the election in 2016 and were able to win more senate seats in 2018, they would not be in this position. People can blame Cocaine Mitch all they want, if the democracts were in this position, they'd pick a justice too. That said, i think this is terrible for them with the election upcoming. If Trump picks Barbara Lagoa, will they spend the next month destroying the integrity of a cuban-american right before the election? How's that gonna look?

I would be surprised if they attack the pick itself other than to say that the person is not reflective of what the public would want in a justice.

The Democrats will likely say they need more time to make an educated decision, that the process is being rushed, and that the Republicans are railroading and acting in bad faith by not allowing the public to have a say with the election weeks away (versus 9 months away in 2016). There will a lot of “why the rush!?”

We all know the pick is being rushed as they could lose big time in the house and senate in a few weeks. But a repeat of a Michael Avenatti type lawyer with fake rape gangbangs and 35 years old stories from college parties will do no good. That said, I predict that the judge will probable be nominated and confirmed before RGB is in the ground and next year if the dems sweep, we will see them add 2-3 more SCOTUS judges.
