really? never got this vibe from him.
Alcoholic, drug addict, failed marriage, unable to get along with most people. I remember when I would check on the status of the band after the Cherone album there were all these stories about him just in his house drinking not doing anything with his life. Pretty frustrating how he just seemed to give up releasing music after that album. Maybe Wolfie will release some stuff in the vault. There has to be mountains of it.

Pretty sure I’ve read Alex is the one that wants nothing released. When they did the first remasters of the Roth catalogue, he said no to releasing any demos/outtakes because then it wouldn’t be the same album.

The first time I saw VH, AiC opened for them. That was my only time seeing them. We got there too late for the Ozzy show and totally missed them.

I don't think he was a bad guy necessarily. Had the personality of someone who grew up playing guitar 12 hours a day though.

Ha, I already knew, and tried (possibly unsuccessfully) to explain to Dad that it was in fact another rock star named Eddie who had died.

He had his sound from the first album. It evolved but always unmistakably Eddie. Van Halen II may be my most listened to album due to it being the only 8-track I owned and would leave it playing every night while going to bed from about age 13 to 16.
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

I love Van Halen but I can’t say I really focused much on Eddie. I know Eddie was THE guitar god for a while there but it was his riffs that I loved more than the solos. I never worshiped at his alter. He just wrote a shit ton of fun songs to me. Live and in music videos he always gave off a goofy good natured vibe but when interviewed he often seemed weird and angry. Alcohol really did him no favors.

Well shit. He was a monster. The percussive rhythm stuff, the acrobatics, the shredding...none of it would have mattered if he didn't have that incredible melodic instinct. RIP :peace:

I just watched his solo from a show in 2015. He was still killing it then. A lot cleaner performance than the 07 Roth tour where he was messed up.

Pretty sure I’ve read Alex is the one that wants nothing released. When they did the first remasters of the Roth catalogue, he said no to releasing any demos/outtakes because then it wouldn’t be the same album.
EVH was a perfectionist though so it may not simply be Alex putting a foot down because he wants to, those attempts are misses through some eyes.

The first thing i saw from Van Halen as a current band was that video of the song they put on Lethal Weapon 4. It was Gary Cherone´s album. I hated it, but the guitar was super impressive.

Tom Morello is kinda my Eddie i guess. They have similar paths too with Morello, Wilk and Timmy C changing vocalists over the years.

Part of what is so fascinating about EVH is his ability to change things up depending on his singer but he even changed some while he was playing with Sammy Hagar. Though less my thing than the Dave years, it is impressive that he could adapt and not just plug Hagar in. And his style on 5150 is not the same as For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge or even Balance for that matter. The Gary Cherone years don’t count.

I think one of my next journeys has to be a full on Van Halen run now. I have a long way to go on the current one but maybe this one is next or the next after.

This is a huge bummer. Always wanted to see the DLR version of VH but missed my chance.

I'll always remember Eddie as the guy from the Jump video with the welcoming grin. That went a long way as a kid - he was never trying to look tough and cool like so many other Rock Gods. He understood it was supposed to be FUN.

Riffs, yes. Solos, yes. But dude had groove, too.

EVH's guitar on Intruder would be at or near the top of my favorite pieces of music of his. Plus, it is just a great segue intro Pretty Woman.
