Me either, I loved it from first listen.

Funnily enough, it was Yield that turned me off the band for a while - especially Given to Fly. I thought they were regressing. I didn't really listen to the band from around then til 2004 or so.

man... i remember getting a tape of the Oakland shows when they opened for the Stones, and they debuted some Yield material, and was totally blown off my rocker. I'll never forget hearing DTE for the first time on that tape.... My jaw must have dropped like Wile E Coyote, and tongue rolled across the floor.

Yield was a difficult one for me too, but not as difficult as No Code or Binaural. The difference is that i loved all of them, even if some songs were strange at the time, i just knew they were awesome. I loved them so much that i hated ten for a long time.

Binaural was the first album that I was anticipating its release as a fan, and thus the first I heard the day it came out. It was instantly my second favorite behind No Code.

I didn't hear Binaural til 2004.

I hated every song except Evacuation.

I've warmed to it considerably since.

I've never been disappointed with a PJ album on first listen, just have had some albums get better and better with every listen and some that didn't hold up over time and kinda fell down my list. No code was very nice on first listen, i remember sometimes and in my tree being the first ones to really strike me as some things that just sounded different then i was used to from pearl jam but were songs that sounded like i wanted PJ to become more like. Off he goes was that familiar slow/soft PJ song that right away became my first real favorite from the album. And i remember wondering what the neck was wrong with Eddie's voice on mankind  . The album just had a wonderful feel to it which wasn't new, i had felt that way about all of them to that point. I still have memories of cutting the grass when i listen to it because i listened to it so much on my walkman while doing the yard, still even remember which parts of the yard i would be cutting during each song, and though i didn't enjoy doing the yard work back then, i now think back on that whole time fondly.
This is my favorite album for so many reasons, its just perfect for me

I was really unimpressed with the singles from Ten when they first dropped. My friend insisted Pearl Jam were awesome. I really didn't like them. He loaned me Ten. After I heard Black, Oceans and Release, I started to warm to the album. Now I think it's brilliant.

Vs, I liked right away.

Vitalogy was abrasive but I really loved every song. Due to personal issues at the time and some unfortunate associations, I put it on the shelf and didn't listen to it for a long, long time. Now, it's my favorite PJ album and one of my all-time favorite albums. And the PJ album I reach for most often.

No Code I loved instantly, except for Habit, which still hasn't grown on me. I've cooled a bit on the second half of No Code.

Yield blew me away, but didn't have a lot of lasting replay value for me at first. I listened to it twice and thought, "okay, what's next? I want the new one now."

The first three tracks of Binaural where a tough sell, but I loved the rest of it upon first listen.

Riot Act, S/T and Backspacer were all lovable from first listen. Riot Act being one of the best first listens I remember having.

Yield got me back into them.

I don't really remember what happened...I bought Vitalogy the day it came out, I really liked it, but then I put it up, and pretty much didn't listen to Pearl Jam for 4 years. Then a buddy of mine played Yield, and I was blown away. "Brain of J" and "Given To Fly" really took ahold of me, and during the summer of 1998 Yield and Hello Nasty were pretty much all I listened to.

Yield didn't sound strange to me at all though...If anything, I thought THIS is what I had been hoping the band would sound like. I don't know how to really explain it, but the album really scratched me where I itched.

Around 1999 is when No Code finally clicked with me. Since then, it's been my favorite. But really, the Vitalogy > NC > Yield > Binaural stretch will always be my favorite. To me, it's Pearl Jam's 'Beggars Banquent' > 'Let It Bleed' > 'Sticky Fingers' > 'Exile on Main St.' run. It's b/c of those 4 albums why I'm such a big fan of this band.

I wish I was old enough to appreciate their music back in 1996 but I was only 5 years old then. I got into Pearl Jam in 2007/8 and No Code was the first record that immediately grabbed me. I mean, I'd heard the songs from Ten before and liked them but No Code was the album where I went "Okay, this is interesting." This album is responsible for really getting me interested in Pearl Jam

Not a huge fan of Avocado. I really liked Backspacer when I first heard it (it was the first PJ album whose release I was looking forward to) but now I think it's not one of their best records, although it's a solid album. It kind of had the opposite effect of Riot Act, an album I was lukewarm to on my first listen but now have grown to love.

It is quite interesting to hear the perspective of someone who did not directly experience the period and is looking at it from outside the time and place it was released.

On a side note, I also cannot think of an album whose artwork was so essential to the listening experience as this one...the other day I put this on and I still stare at the polaroids and the album all unfolded.

One thing I'll say about No Code - people always talks about how the album is "full of codes" yet no one has ever once been able to point out of these codes to me.

Well, I can't tell you how good it makes me feel to find others in my boat. Probably 6 or 7 % of what I hold against No Code stems from this "hidden code" nonsense. Knowing there are others suffering with me makes me like the album more.

Pearl Jam is all about community. Jamily, if you will.
