Damn.

Just to clarify, whose fault is this again? Joe Biden's fault in 1994 or Donald Trump's fault in 2017?

These are the two fucking clowns we have to choose from, in the world's most advanced country. Nice work, 'Merica, and hats off to the two-party system that has provided us with this amazing choice of 70-somethings to vote for.
Long before 2017 Biden recognized the problem with the 90's crime bill (as if you can blame Biden alone for a bill passed by a 538 person legislative body and signed by a President). What excuse could the Trump administration possibly have for seeing a program that identified a program and had created a full document of recommendations to fix it, and then axe that entire program and allow African American kids to suffer?

Probably something to do with black kids more often coming from lower SES, single parent homes, but because of disparate impact analysis, racism.

Also, didn't the Obama administration fix this by threatening schools that suspend or expell minority kids at higher rates?

Ugh. The video is only 10 minutes long.

- In 2011, Office of Civil Rights identified a disparity in suspensions and reasons for suspensions in hundreds of school districts nationwide.

- After an investigation in 2013 of just one of the school districts, which found "African American students who may have been subjected to disparate treatment [...] when compared to White students engaged in the same or similar conduct" and made dozens of recommendations including mentoring, social workers, and extra training.

- DeVos scrapped the whole thing when she took office b/c it addressed unintentional, systemic racism and not specific, proven, purposeful acts of racism.

=======

Also, to address Bammer's concern, it does say that "Biden played a key role" in getting the 1994 Crime Bill passed at about 8:30.

"I haven't always been right. There's systemic racism that most of us whites don't like to acknowledge even exists. It's been built into every aspect of our system." Biden, 2019

Then it reviews the Biden-Sanders Unity Task Force Recommendations for improving the issue should he become President.

I don't think anything, since I meant to type "BLM," but for shits and giggles let's say BLA stands for Black Liberation Army.

More progressive revisionist history.

You clearly indicated it was "activists"

That was before Walter Wallace.

I mean ... I know a LITTLE. Family calls 911 to help their mentally ill son, and the cops show up and shoot him?

If the election wasn't in 5 days I think this one would get more attention. Family calls 911 for assistance with a mentally ill person, they send cops, guys dead soon after. "But the guy had a knife!!!" Yea yea.

There's video but I'm not sure I recommend watching it. The family reportedly called for an ambulance because he was having a mental health crisis. He was carrying a knife. Cops roll up and in less than a minute, I believe?, they've fired at least 10 shots, despite being at least 8-10 feet away from him. Fact-check these details, I might not have the numbers correct but the basic structure is there--no need to shoot, a clear case of excessive force.

The video is literally a few posts up. Clearly justified.

Its possible they made some tactical mistakes prior to the video, like they rolled up too close. At the time of the shooting they were trying to create space between them and the decedent, and he continued to advance. 8-10 feet is nothing. If the shooting was justified, the number of shots fired before the target is incapacitated is irrelevent.

I've heard it claimed that Philly PD got rid of tasers due to budget issues, but haven't seen that confirmed. Ideally in this situation, one cop would have less lethal out while the other provides lethal backup. Might not have helped with someone in this state. Even if tasers or bean bag rounds work to get someone on the ground, they can pretty frequently get right back up again. They only seem to work on people that decide to give up at that moment.

Also, the ambulance is not coming until police secure the scene. In no jurisdiction would EMTs respond to this type of call without police backup. Should we start providing tranquilizer guns to EMTs?

The family trying to stop Walter without getting stabbed and the police having no trouble staying out of reach of the knife?

Call and ambulance and the cops show up and kill you. If the only tool in your toolbox is a cop then every problem is a dead black man.
