Educate me: What’s the fallout when an unarmed mental health professional responds to this call and gets stabbed in the throat?

Those people have special mind control powers. They're basically X Men. Nothing to worry about

I used to be a social worker. I had people freak out. You get hours of training on how to know when someone is getting upset, de-escalate before they pull out a weapon, and keep yourself safe once they have a weapon out. The magic is in steps 1 and 2. If cops have any training whatsoever in those areas than it is comically invisible.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

I'm not sure, but I'd like the decision tree to be more than

Has Weapon? > Yes > Kill

learning how to accurately throw a cast net probably a lot less time consuming than learning how to accurately shoot a gun

I knew a DCFS caseworker who got her head bashed in by a guy who was pissed about her trying to remove his kid from his care. It was pretty sad stuff. She died.

I do think cops should be expected to take on more risk than the average citizen, but is there an actual legal mechanism that can mandate that? They aren't military. It seems like forcing cops to take larger risks with their safety can't be done through legal means. Or can it?

I don't see why not. Set standards, train on them, test on them before you get a gun, and discipline failures to adhere.

Pretty sure this is what they do today.

"include topics such as Firearms, Driver Training, Motor Vehicle Law, and Arrest, Search and Seizure."

Now add de-escalation, crisis management, and protection of civil rights, which are what we're talking about, not pew pew training.

Or, y'know, take a little PD funding and train some social workers to go out and handle nonviolent 911 calls.

African-Americans here in North Carolina are telling each other to stay home tomorrow and Wednesday regardless of the results for fear of being attacked.

African Americans is an outdated term. It invalidates the life experiences of caucasians of African descent now living in America. Please use Black people instead.
