Well, im in the minority, but i think sending Finn on a journey in TLJ was important and good character development. IIts just that in TROS it meant nothing and he was just kind of along for the ride.

Finn's growth in TLJ is important. I understand how he could feel, as an actor, that he was thrust aside because the mission is separate from the main action of the film. And obviously, we can't ignore that there were other actors that felt wounded or betrayed or slighted by Rian's vision. Whatever we think of it as fans, it's important to recognize that Boyega's not alone. I agree with you that on a character level, Finn's development in TLJ is good and important to the character, though. I'd love to hear Boyega address that question specifically.

I disagree, however, that he's just along for the ride in TROS. His arc is basically complete by the end of TLJ. Again, he's not the main character. So he doesn't necessarily "develop" in TROS but his impact on Rey and on the Resistance and on the story is fantastic. He's much more connected and involved in the primary action. Which is probably what he is responding to as an actor. He's certainly has the least impact of the "big three." But just like Han in ROTJ, Finn's involvement, while smaller, is vital. Rey is the Luke. Poe is the Leia. Finn is the Han. After Empire Han's arc was also basically complete, just like Finn in TLJ.

Obviously, Finn is Force sensitive. I do wonder if JJ ever wanted that to be explicit in TROS. Is there a version of the movie/script where it's stated outright? JJ likes to leave some things open -- clearly, a strength and a weakness depending on your perspective. Watching TROS the first time, it annoyed me that a bigger deal wasn't made of Finn's Force ability. On second view it made more sense and I'm fine with it, personally. But I do wonder how Boyega feels about that specifically, as an actor.

I’d say he has more importance in TROS and TLJ than Finn.
Certainly to Rey.
Even when she’s getting in the escape pod in TLJ she says to chewie to keep trying to keep reaching the resistance and ask how Finn is
He’s still all fucked up after kylo and the lightsaber as far as she knows

I still think both Finn and Poe are super weak characters. Finn at least got a good movie with TFA.

But its just Rey and Kylo for me in this sequel trilogy.

It’s got problems for sure. The problems / bits I don’t like are just far more numerous than anything that can be levelled at TLJ. I really only had the casino planet being questionable for me.

Everything in this is just so convenient and unearned.
The emperor just happens to have a new fleet
The knife Luke couldn’t find just happens to be on the floor
Zorri just happens to have a key to let them land on kylos star destroyer to rescue chewie
Huxx just happens to be the spy

And on and on and on

I really hope I just come to ‘Fuck it. It’s Star Wars!’ And love It, in time.
Took me over a year to get to there with rogue one.
So there’s hope.

He's also the most compelling stories of any character that Star Wars has ever created, and JJ completely failed to capitalize on that despite having created the character in the first place.
JJ is good at grand ideas but I dont think his strong suit is really storytelling and character development.

Finn was a wasted opportunity. By ROS, there’s no point to him even being there.

Poe didn’t need to be in any of it.

That’s a good question.
Just want it all to be great? If we had internet around ROTJ we’d have seen the same bewilderment and doubt I reckon. TROS has the same bonkers nonsensical all over the place story rise does. But ramped up.
It’ll come around as Jedi did I hope.

It's weird to think of Chewbacca as an alien.
It's weirder to think of the human characters as aliens.

Well, depends on whether you're on Kashyyyk or not.

I can’t find the post it’s somewhere in the force awakens thread
But one of my favourite Star Wars memories ever is I remember posting in there going something like ‘where’s han and chewie they better be in this!’ Cos we knew Harrison Ford was cast

And then we got that trailer. ‘Chewie..were home’ is still the most exciting fuck yeah tear inducing moment I can remember in years. We here on RM all lost our shit :)
Happy days :)

I still think about that moment from time to time. Might be the best thing from the sequels.

Is this a catch-all Star Wars thread now?

If so - I watched A New Hope with my daughters the other week. The older one mostly followed it, the younger was just constantly 'Who that?', 'That a bad guy?', 'What he say?' I didn't think she'd really followed anything. Anyway the other day in a stationary store she came running up to me all excited holding a greeting card yelling 'I found the princess daddy!' - the card had a picture of Leia on the front
"I really enjoy sandwiches but the other guys are so good at making sandwiches that I don't make them. Now I make sandwiches."

‘mature audiences’ definitely a reference to the long lost C3PO DP series
All posts by this account, even those referencing real things, are entirely fictional and are for entertainment purposes only; i.e. very low-quality entertainment. These may contain coarse language and due to their content should not be viewed by anyone

Since my daughter enjoyed A New Hope so much, I'm thinking I'll probably watch Empire with her over the Christmas break.

If I was king for a day at RM, I would make a coding rule that posts in the Star Wars subforum did not populate threads to the View Active Topics page.
