I think these two things actually seem pretty compatible with each other!

Dave sounds like kind of a lost soul on it, looking for his own voice as a guitarist, a singer, and a songwriter, all under the weight of this immense personal and artistic loss that concurrently signified a massive cultural crossroads to the rest of the world. It's a fascinating mess of a record, a diamond in the rough shaped by all kinds of forces beyond the control of its creators, and is a singular moment in '90's rock as a result.

He was pretty public about the whole album being sort of a tossed-off exercise in getting back into the creative headspace after some major changes; he threw it together really quickly, put it out, toured in support of Mike Watt, and just tried to have fun.

I made it sound more dramatic than I meant for it to -- "getting back into the creative headspace after some major changes" is probably a better description of the reality of the project. I agree that none of the songs sound like they're "about" any of that heavier personal stuff. But I think it is unquestionably the context into which the record was received culturally, and that will probably always inform how I hear it to an extent.

It's just messy in a really beautiful way, something that's not at all self-conscious despite having everything in the world to be self-conscious about.

Scentless Apprentice type songs. The 10 minute demo/rehearsal of that one on With The Lights Out is one of my favorite things they ever released. So raw and beastly.

...and apart from the Oh, George lyric ("The train that I got onto up and left that town / Threw it up as it went down"), I can't think of any lyrics on the album that make me think of Kurt, or his divorce from Jennifer Youngblood.

I remember when the album came out, after Unplugged and Muddy Banks had been released, thinking along the lines of "Ooh, an entire album about Kurt..." And then it was just a really fun record!

The weird thing I remember about that album at the time of release -- and mind you I was 12 -- was how much it felt like an "underdog" album, even though it was an album by one of the most famous rock musicians on the planet. It was hard not to root for Dave -- I remember being really excited when "Big Me" became so popular, and then a little later when "Monkey Wrench" and especially "Everlong" really took off. The Color and the Shape had a real "feel good hit of the summer" thing going for it in '97, right after I graduated grade school. Good times...

Truly. I was almost 14 at the time and that was completely fucking new to me.

Big Me was the first song I learned on guitar.

But Big Me was the first full song I learned because it involves every basic guitar chord one should know.

Yeah, the debut, The Colour and the Shape, and Wasting Light to me are the three times Dave Grohl put it all together. And though now it can be a bit ham fisted and repetitive, his shows have always been great (saw him touring the second album in ‘98, opening for RHCP in ‘00, playing MSG in something like 2011, and at Global Citizens in ‘12(?)).
