Oh I totally agree with this. But I think that as the process unfolds, all it will take for those elected officials who are smarter than Matt Gaetz and Rudy Giuliani will be one sobering conversation with a career intelligence leader about why this path could lead to the destruction of America.
I generally think these people are stupid, but not evil. There are exceptions. But the benefit to being stupid-not-evil is that you can see the light, if the right person shows it to you.
As of now Graham and McConnell are fully on board with Trumps bullshit right now.
I dont know. This conversation feels a lot like the conversation of "Oh maybe now Trump will become presidential" that never fucking happened.
They have backed him every step of the way. It wont change now. Why would it? Their jobs aren't at stake. They were all just voted in again.
The Koch brothers, and the larger market,
hate Trump, because he's incredibly unstable, and markets hate instability. McConnell and Graham are going along for the ride to a point, because they can't risk alienating a huge voting swath before the GA runoffs in January. I'm sure they don't even know when exactly they plan to bail, but I think their general approach is "Support Trump's BS right up to the last possible second, maybe get some legal wins to make it a foregone conclusion we win GA, then let's dump his body in a ditch and move on."
I hope you are right.
It really sucks that the best case for this is still incredibly shitty and dangerous.
This.
The “Mitch and team are just playing along with cries of a stolen election because they know it will keep the base frothing in a manner that is useful for winning in Georgia” is really, really not a great case for “it’s fine.”
It
is dangerous, even beyond the fact that it is intentionally heating up already-simmering tensions about the state of our democracy for cynical reasons. It’s dangerous on just a basic, “human beings can get hurt” level.
Just in the last 40 days, we’ve seen kidnapping plots against a sitting governor,
armed men stopped in transit to polling locations targeted by right wing media, campaign busses harassed by coordinated effort on the interstate, a
poll worker forced to go into hiding after conspiracy-minded Republicans shared his personal information online, and
death threats against election officials.
This shit is metastasizing into a real ugly mess on social media...
...and on a long enough timeline it does end up getting people hurt.
