I always thought the lyrics make it pretty clear that it's about the singer (the elderly woman) staying behind in a small town and someone who left the town returning with lines like:
"I changed by not changing at all
Small town predicts my fate"
and
"My god, its been so long, never dreamed you'd return"
Agreed. That discussion by Ed in this interview felt like something I had always known. Not sure if mentioned by him at another point, or just simply how I interpreted the lyrics.

There’s definitely an old (mid 90’s?) interview where he tells this same story with fewer details...him writing the song sort of as a vocal warmup exercise and then someone in the band overhearing it. My memory was that it was Jeff, not Stone, but my memory isn’t worth a lot.

Anyways, I thought it was common knowledge? But it was nice to hear a more contextualized version with a little more discussion on the song itself.

When it came out I thought Elderly Woman was an allegorical comment on how the band and their success was being perceived (I change by not changing at all. A small town predicts my fate. Perhaps that’s what no one wants to see). These days I’m more inclined to think that the guy who shrugs a bit and almost dismissively says “I guess some of that was still resonating” about a part of his life he rewrote into a story about being raped by your mom and going to prison for killing prostitutes is probably not analyzing his own art in a deeply reflective way.

This was a good listen. I feel like Ed was more open and forthcoming than he usually is, and I could feel his palpable sadness in the conversations about the various deaths and his overriding joy at recognizing his fortune in having endured all he has and come out the other side mostly intact. I felt pretty uncomfortable, though, when Stern said he didn't believe that Chris Cornell had killed himself and doubled down on it a moment later. Good on him for ragging Eddie about the smoking.

Not exactly, no. He just says a couple times that he doesn't believe that Chris actually killed himself. He doesn't expound on what he actually thinks, though.

I don’t know much about Stern other than his reputation as a bit of a loudmouth but I think he managed the conversation really well. I just caught some of the video clips and Stern’s facial expressions were part admiration, part disbelief he’s finally talking to Ed. Really very genuine.

Great job, Howard, Robin and Ed. Fascinating stuff and maybe a pre cursor to further conversations.

Finally finished it yesterday. One of best interviews by either party.

I got a real kick out of the Martin Short story.

Howard stern is the absolute best at what he does. Yea he can be crass though not nearly as much as his earlier years. He is absolutely brilliant at interviewing people. Every single one I’ve ever heard has been a joy to listen to. People trust him and he is good at taking their guard down.

Howard stern rules. The guy changed the face of radio

I'm late to this but wow what a fascinating interview.

The stuff about his childhood was extremely revealing - Stern came at it with such a sense of empathy for what he had to have gone through. I knew the broad outline like we all do, but he really did go through incredible trauma all the way up to high school age. Ten makes even more sense than ever now.

Also, you don't have to do a ton of reading between the lines with the Chris Cornell stuff. He's pretty cagey about it, but when he says they didn't hang much over the last ten years (combined with talking up how great Lilly is) you can obviously see that the fork in the road was Vicky and that whole situation. Happens all the time - people who grow apart later in life for one reason or another, usually due to a significant other. But clearly, Vicky took Chris away from the community in more ways than one.

And of course there was a lot of delightful stuff about Bruce and Neil and Elderly Woman and such. Even though he was on for 3 hours they barely even bothered to talk about Pearl Jam's music. They could easily do a few more hours just breaking down some of Howard's favorites and I'd be completely entertained.

Anyway, can't believe it finally happened. 30 years in, he finally revealed some stuff!

Stone has mentioned several tines, about hearing Ed play it that first time, and really being blown away by Ed’s skills. Asking him to keep the song. Don’t know where Jeff was, but it was probably Stone.

Could you upload the interview on a new link? It has expired and I haven't been able to find it anywhere via another link.

Thanks!

What stood out to me:

Ed knew who high pitch Eric was and referenced a bit where howard and high pitch tried to guess the lyrics to yellow led better

Ed had a lot of restrictions put on howard, or howard has changed a lot over the last 10 to 20 years. I have never heard howard do such a tame, ass kissing interview before. Mostly devoid of humor. Robin hardly laughed or chimed in.

Ed's springsteen impression

Alot of this seemed a bit pre-planned or scripted which I've never really suspected of howard interviews

Ed never met scott weiland

Ed is standing by kings of leon even though they've fallen off

Howard kind of calling out Ed on the idea of artists or music stars being a political arm of a party

I am sort of left with the idea Howard and Letterman had a falling out. Letterman was a regular part of the conversation but Howard never referenced his own experiences with him. I liked Ed's retelling of the letterman bit that eventually got him to come on

The part about the Ramones member that Ed was friends with. I forget which one

Ed either being embarrassed or pretending he was embarrassed of the 1993ish PJ pull back from commercialism. I've always admired it

I don’t think Howard and Letterman have had a falling out. Letterman has had him on his Netflix show. And he seems to be quite selective in his guests.

Two hours in so far. Really enjoying this.

Spent too much time talking about Bradley Cooper, though, and Ed refrained from pissing on Dave A. when Glorified G came up. What a guy.

Stern most certainly Chumming the water with Glorified G and Cornell references. Well played Ed and Stern!
