Geez, I just looked at a list, and I can't remember some of the recent stuff, and the older stuff is long since faded to a blur in my mind.

Let's say .... Somewhere in the Lullaby or Diary level of quality? Remember how you felt reading the story in Haunted about the kid sitting on the pool drain? There's a scene in this book that 'll give you that feeling back.

Can I ask which scene you're referring to? I just finished the novel (I really loved it) but I didn't find anything viscerally nauseating or uncomfortable -- certainly not on the level of 'Guts.'

Starting "Darkmans" by Nicola Barker.

I've had this book in my shelf for almost a decade and haven't read it yet. Anyway, I'm just now seeing that it's the third book in a loose trilogy. Is anyone else familiar with this trilogy? How connected is it? Am I gonna be super lost if I start with the final part?

Hey, I saw this before your PM and was going to respond, I promise! This book was wild, and it's got a bit of everything--it's about gender, sex, violence, class, race, etc. etc.--so I definitely recommend it.

I know a bunch of us were reading or re-visiting Dune, and I finished it for the first time a few weeks ago. I'm not sure if I offered my thoughts, but I did really dig it--first 2/3 more than the last 1/3--but don't really feel like I need to keep going with the series. I read some summaries of the later books and I feel like I'm good.

As a postscript, I watched the Lynch version of Dune over the last few nights and hoooooly shit, it was bad. It moved so fast that it was like watching a Wikiepedia summary of the novel. All of my favorite scenes were cut out. I felt nothing for these characters. I was hoping for something redeeming or "Lynchian" in here but couldn't find much to enjoy. The representation of the Baron was the closest it got. I guess it was cool seeing Big Ed when he was younger.

Still haven't watched Lynch's movie (the only of his films that I haven't seen). But I'll get to it.

I was hoping for something redeeming or "Lynchian" in here but couldn't find much to enjoy.

I want to walk this back just a bit--the guild navigators were also super trippy and weird, liked that bit of interpretation a lot.

Well, just got added as the final text for the seminar I'm in, so looks like I'll find out soon enough.

Was it a nightmare–the result of bad indigestion–or did something truly scary happen after dinner in the Argentine town? One Saturday night a bankrupt bachelor in his sixties and his mother dine with a wealthy friend. They discuss their endlessly connected neighbors. They talk about a mysterious pit that opened up one day, and the old bricklayer who sometimes walked to the cemetery to cheer himself up. Anxious to show off his valuable antiques, the host shows his guests old windup toys and takes them to admire an enormous doll. Back at home, the bachelor decides to watch some late night TV before retiring. The news quickly takes a turn for the worse as, horrified, the newscaster finds herself reporting about the dead rising from their graves, leaving the cemetery, and sucking the blood of the living—all somehow disturbingly reminiscent of the dinner party.

I find I can only read so many Aira novels before I get tired of his schtick and need a (long) break, but it's been a while for me. The ones I still think about the most are Varamo and Ghosts.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I've read Ghosts twice, it's probably my favorite. I've also read Landscape Painter twice, and it didn't really bit me until the 2nd time.
