We haven't had a big shooting lately (outside of inner cities of course.) Maybe with the little uptick on terror attacks in Europe, we are cycling back into that mode for awhile?

I agree with this. I like owning pistols for target practice and peace of mind just in case of a house intruder, but there's no need for assault rifles or other high powered weapons in the general populace.

Please give up your pistol because it's far more likely to go out and kill someone than a rifle. Get rid of your knives, too. For the children.

Wouldn't it be nice to really research this? Lots of data could help the "conversation."macphisto wrote:US Homicides (2018): 14,123blueviper wrote:I agree with this. Yes, lets continue researching this as a crime/ sociological issue, not as a politicized health issue.elliseamos wrote:Wouldn't it be nice to really research this? It amazes me that so many of the pro-gun crowd are also in the no abortion camp.

I can think of a few reasons. not that one needs reasons in the first place.blueviper wrote:

Re: America..why won't you just ban the fucking gun?
I feel like the difference between the handgun (or knife) compared to rifles is that with these semi-auto rifles, you can kill a lot of people very quickly. As we've seen, many times. I've got no issue with people who own a gun, it's more common than I thought. My pro-gun step-brother who owns and loves an AR-15 told me that in a sane world, he can't keep a gun like this. His idea was that you can own one, but it has to be kept at a gun range, and "played with" there. I think that's a good idea. Keep your hand guns and normal rifles or whatever the terms are. But if it's more suitable in a war, then go play with it in some kind of club.macphisto wrote:US Homicides (2018): 14,123blueviper wrote:I agree with this. Your pro-gun step-brother is a fucking idiot.
And he's not really pro-gun.

Even if this were a good idea, I don't know how feasible it is under the current law. It would mean that all ranges would probably have to be FFLs and log all firearms into their books. Now they have to maintain these records for 30 years. Oh, and the range has to have significant upgrades for security and safes for all the weapons. For a given public range, how many members might there be? Dozens per lane at a minimum?macphisto wrote:Your pro-gun step-brother is a fucking idiot.

If you manufactured your own rifle, no FFL will touch it without you jumping through hoops and getting it serialized.
This model only works in places like Switzerland or Germany where shooting sports are the domain of a relatively small number of well to do hobbyists. Which is kinda what Biden is going for with his placing everything under the auspices of the NFA plan.

What about FBI crime stats? Localities should improve their reporting? Sure? The data has gotten better over time? oh no, paperwork and actual precautionary steps to ensure that these dangerous things are accounted for... you know what, nevermind, seems complicated.simple schoolboy wrote:Even if this were a good idea, I don't know how feasible it is under the current law. If they wanted to be FFLs, they already would be. Its not part of their business as it currently stands. The feds made being an FFL significantly more painful to be in the 90s for... reasons. Not sure if its improved anything.elliseamos wrote:oh no, paperwork and actual precautionary steps to ensure that these dangerous things are accounted for... you know what, nevermind, seems complicated.simple schoolboy wrote:Even if this were a good idea, I don't know how feasible it is under the current law. The physical security of your typical outdoor range is effectively non existent. The only valuables on site is typically a small amount of ammunution. If you want one stop looting targets, forcing 100s of people to keep their rifles in safes crammed into the hunters safety training office sounds like an attractive approach.
You keep bringing up this same objection every time without engaging with the potential upsides or downsides. In your universe are regulations and checking boxes unalloyed goods?
I mean, wanting to make sure poor people have no legal, effective form of self defense could go either way, depending on your viewpoint.
