Movie: 1917

Post by Chris_H_2 »

so because i'm a deadbeat, i skipped out of work today on my first day of the new year and saw 1917. it was beautifully shot in a series of continuous one-takes that are seamlessly spliced together. it's definitely not a true story, but more historical fiction. but it's based on a war that hasn't gotten nearly enough attention cinematically as other wars. and it's stressful and brutally detailed.

i loved it, and think it's one of my favorite "war" movies. i may see it again when it gets it's full release (heh) next week.

the trailers for this make me anxious in a way that Dunkirk couldn't in the actual movie so I'm excited to see it. can't wait.

i initially thought the filming would be distracting, with the camera 2 steps ahead of the actors every way. but i quickly realized how good it made the storytelling.

and yeah, i had high hopes for dunkirk. that one just fell flat for me.

They brought this one back to theatres for a couple weeks here so i got to see it tonight.
What a film. As said above, those one takes really put you in the scene. And with them using period correct uniforms , its still incredible to see what soldiers went in to battle with and the conditions they were under really come through here. Glad I got to see it.

My one complaint about it is how everyone says it looks like one shot. It is very clearly two shots!

The scene where his buddy dies, and you see him slowly losing color in his face is really well done.
