I guess the question for some people (since few are arguing that this isn't executed well for what it is) is whether 20 years out a song like this has a place (in moderation)

I think it does, and I have a hard time equating this song to cock rock power ballads. The lyrics are far too good for that comparison.

At this point, I'll take a well written, well executed PJ song over the fast and easy forgettable songs off BS.

Definitely. It's interesting the amount of people calling this "just a cock rock ballad", relative to the amount of people who really don't care about lyrics much. These are very good for the type of song it is, and 80s power ballads have very bad lyrics. It reminds me of Counting Crows in that they have no problem writing a shamelessly cheesy pop song, but they will put relatively interesting stuff lyrically over it. It might not look great on paper but it has depth.

The "It's a fragile thing this life we lead..." section is the closest, but no, it doesn't really. There are rises and falls but nothing deliberately set aside as a chorus. That was a weakness in Unthought Known but a definite plus here.

I agree. I think a big chorus would have been way too much for this song.

It's very interesting that Ed wrote this in a motel room while listening to sirens in the street at night. That's exactly the image I get from this, and considering the melancholy kitsch and dirty-cheese of motels, the solo is entirely appropriate for that feeling of "My family aren't here and I want to go home" which is kind of heartbreaking, team. I get it.

I haven't been able to get past the music yet, and the lyrics could be taken as kind of cheesy if Eddie's vocal wasn't so beautiful and sincere. As others have said, he really saves this one for me. His emotion is palpable in this song--the execution is quite moving really and I'm not usually a fan of these types of ballads. EDIT: I should clarify that I really like the lyrics, but if Ed didn't pull of the song so well they probably wouldn't have stood out the way they do.
