CYR is out. I havent finished yet and it sounds weird really. Like a far more polished and superior Monuments...I like a few songs right off, like Cyr and Wyttch, but i wonder if James really did bring something for this album. Or Jeff.

Finished a first listen. Some very cool songs mixed with weird boring mid tempo songs. Too much synth-y for my taste, specially when reminds me of Oceania or Monuments.
Also, some very strong songs like Cyr, Wyytch or Minerva.

Its a difficult listen yeah. But there are a few gems.

This album could be cut in half, and it would be fine. It has its moments, but there's a lot here that is mediocre at best. This album kinda meanders along, occasionally taking a good turn but feeling lost a good portion of the time.

it has too many mid tempo songs that sound similar. And it kinda reminds me of the worst in Oceania and Monuments.

Yup. And that kind of thing is noticeable on an album with 12 or so tracks. The fact that this thing has twenty songs really just highlights the issue. It feels like it's just droning on at stretches.VinylGuy wrote:it has too many mid tempo songs that sound similar. And it kinda reminds me of the worst in Oceania and Monuments.

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/ ... lly-corganAlthough Smashing Pumpkins are no strangers to synths, they have always remained a guitar band at heart. And yet Cyr, the second album since three-quarters of their “classic” lineup reconvened in 2018 (original bassist D’arcy Wretzky is still absent, although thankfully no longer in prison for horse-related offences), finds Billy Corgan setting the controls for the heart of 1982 with a full-blown synth-pop set.
Normally, such willingness to transcend genre boundaries would be commendable, but Cyr falls flat on so many levels. Lush textures abound, but there’s barely a memorable tune present, which makes the decision to release it as a 72-minute double album hubristic in the extreme.
Of the 20 phoned-in songs here, 19 are at best inessential, at worst actively irritating. The risibly titled Anno Satana (edgy!) finds the band sounding vaguely engaged, though Corgan spoils it with his opening line, “Did you know I’m a wanted man?”, which comes across like the blowhard posturing of a small-town bar-room bore. And while his whiny – there’s no nice way of describing it – voice by and large complemented the angsty aggression at play on 1993 career high Siamese Dream, here it sounds merely grating set against gentler soundscapes. Even the band’s frequently wheeled-out female backing vocals fail to sweeten this particular pill.

All these talented guitarists think the guitar is dead and in a roundabout way, they're the ones killing it
They need to go tell the record industry suit n tie people to go fuck off n let them do what they do best
