Its not that he was transporting a minor for immoral purposes, which is about the only criminal act that I am familiar with where the state border is relevant.
Kyle killed people, sure. He also only shot people that put hands on him or pointed a gun at him. Several other folks chased him but had the good sense to stop when he turned around and presented his rifle.
The narrative that he traveled there to murder people is pretty bizarre because he ran away at the first sign of a threat (Rosenbaum angling up on him, and then chasing him). He fulfilled (exceeded?) his duty to retreat in all 3 shootings.
You can maybe have some sympathy for Huber or Grosskreutz who potentially thought they were going after a guy who arbitrarily shot someone, but he was running away, no longer a threat and heading towards police. Weird behavior for a mass shooter.

In the list of things Kyle Rittenhouse did wrong that night, that's the easiest to mock?simple schoolboy wrote:Anyone have a response as to why 'state lines' became a meme? Some magical federal modifier that doesn't exist?

Still crazy to me that a 17 year old wannabe commando gets himself into a situation where he kills two people, and then becomes a cause.

What about him crossing state borders has any significance? People keep bringing it up as if means something. Pretty civic minded kid to go out of his way to try to clean up the town and prevent rioters from doing more damage.Rob wrote:Still crazy to me that a 17 year old wannabe commando gets himself into a situation where he kills two people, and then becomes a cause.
Didn't shoot anyone not attacking him. Righteous shoot, lucky kid.
Considering his charging documents pretty clearly laid out the case for his self defense claim, the murder charges seem politically motivated.

But one might argue that each state has different laws about firearms, and he had no fucking idea what the firearms laws were in the state he was entering. Thus his current legal problems.

He's not being charged with anything relating to transporting the rifle. Certainly nothing Federally or by Illinois (which has stricter laws than Wisconsin). If he ever possed the rifle in Illinois he would be charged for not having a Firearm Owner ID (FOID) and for being underage. The rifle was in Wisconsin throughout (not that this matters). His weapons charge is for being a minor in possession of a dangerous weapon.B wrote:That's my point. The Wisconsin law on minors is not that clearly written, but it appears there is a carve out for 16-18 year olds with a hunting license or under the supervision of an adult as long as its not a short barrelled rifle. Clearly he was not involved in hunting, but the law is strangely phrased, so I'm not sure what clause they are relying on for this charge.
However, the guy that purchased the rifle for Kyle is fucked because it was a straw purchase. Feds haven't filed charges yet, but he already has two state felony counts for giving Kyle the rifle. Straw purchases are infrequently prosecuted, but maybe due to the profile of this case it will be. Its a weird area that the feds could be super aggressive in but they don't like the optics of throwing shooters girlfriends in federal prison.
