2020 End of Year Mixtapes

Post by ridleybradout »

Hey RMers!

Like many I've been largely absent this year for obvious reasons, but I thought I'd drop in to kick start the 2020 playlist thread.

Not many new artists discovered this year, though I did get onto bdrmm late thanks to Higgs :nice:
My taste is a bit more poppy than most of you, but I hope you enjoy this mix anyway - as always I took great pride in the sequencing 8-)
I wouldn't say it has a COVID theme as such, but there are a few songs here that definitely fit the soundtrack for this year from hell.

Up yours 2020! :finger:

A few mixtapes i have done this year:

Gone Baby Gone: Some chill, sad, obscure songs about being dumped, left out of something, near death. It goes from Bob Dylan´s Not Dark Yet to Lanegan´s Last One In The World closing with Phoebe Bridgers´s I Know The End.

LINK https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3CI85 ... 3wWK9JkP2A

Some Groove: A mostly 90s list of hip hop obscurities, with some new grooving songs, featuring 7 Days Of Funk, Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, Rza, Wu Tang, Kali Uchis, Delinquent Habits, Aska Matsumiya and more.

LINK https://open.spotify.com/playlist/63uOR ... E4buAWiacg

Bummed Out - We Were Dead Anyway- : A companion mix bummer list i made for its ´up in arms sister mixtape. Features mostly sad songs about death featuring Mad Season, Chris Cornell, STP, Bright Eyes, Screaming Trees

Excellent. I've been collecting songs throughout the year that I've felt would go well in a 2020 playlist. Now I've got to go through the culling and sequencing part. I think I'm gonna end up with one regular mix and then a secondary collection that has longer pieces that would slow down the main mix. I look forward to seeing what everyone else brings to the table.

I’d love to take credit for that logo but I got it from a Facebook t-shirt ad :P

What did you think of Powderfinger’s ‘Unreleased’ album?

doone has asked me to answer that one for her Brad.

She loves "Day By Day" and cant quite believe it was left off the original album - it's a cracker. "Daybreak" is good too, but the rest of the album, whilst containing some interesting musical ideas and never becoming "boring" per se, could just as easily have been left unreleased.

I think 2020 was a good year for albums more than it was a good year for singles. Maybe it was the extended home-based down time that played into that a bit - we all found ourselves with more time at our homes and where better to consume albums in their entirety?

My mix this year was meant to be 2 discs but I kinda fucked that up. The track change at 11 to 12 might be a little rough...The mix is split in 4 sections:

- 80's Post Punk Revival
- Indie/Americana/Pop
- Groovier Tunes
- A Quiet Finish

Some Songs From 2020 (320) (rar)

Separate zip download for doone who can never get my rar files to work

Image

01 The Wants - The Motor
02 Bdrmm - Happy
03 RVG - I Used to Love You
04 Fontaine's DC - Televised Mind
05 Nation of Language - Rush & Fever
06 Powderfinger - Day by Day
07 Samantha Crain - Pastime
08 Soccer Mommy - Bloodstream
09 Surfjan Stevens - Video Game
10 Georgia Maq - Cold Summer
11 Jerry Joseph - Dead Confederate
12 The Avalanches - Born to Lose
13 Mildlife - Memory Palace
14 A Certain Ratio - Get a Grip
15 Smoke Fairies - Chocolate Rabbit
16 Disclosure - Tondo
17 Widowspeak - The Good Ones
18 Rose City Band - Wildflowers
19 L.A. Takedown - There is a Drone in Griffith Park
20 Marcus King - No Pain
21 Bob Dylan - I Contain Multitudes
22 Pearl Jam - River Cross

Is it stupid that I have no problem putting this mp3 mix together but I can't imagine being arsed to put together a Spotify playlist?

I haven't sequenced this year's list yet - most years I limit myself to about 30 tracks but I've spent a lot of time with and become attached to a lot of songs released this year, so the number of must have tunes is just south of fifty in 2020.

Ryan Adams - Dreaming You Backwards
IDLES - Grounds
Tame Impala - Breathe Deeper
Palace - Someday, Somewhere
Phoebe Bridgers - I Know The End
Nadia Reid - The Future
Bruce Springsteen - Ghosts
Bleachers & Bruce Springsteen - Chinatown
King Hannah - Creme Brûlée
Car Seat Headrest - Life Worth Missing
Protomartyr - Michigan Hammers
The Strokes - Bad Decisions
Bonnie Prince Billy - Dream Awhile
