Re: RIP Chris Cornell 1964 - 2017
I listened to it while I was cooking dinner last night.
I love Cornell, and when I first heard about this, I said to myself 'I wish it wasn't a covers album, but it'll be nice to hear the guy's voice on something fresh." But geeze, this album is just terrible. The production is horrific. There are numerous FAR SUPERIOR versions of many of these songs floating out there...and the one's that aren't, just reminded me of really bad cover songs you'd hear on a TV singing competition.
Cornell and Soundgarden have a huge place in my heart, and are a huge part of my musical DNA...I want their legacies to live on... but this is NOT the way to do it... I didn't think I could dislike B.O.B any more... but here we are.

Re: RIP Chris Cornell 1964 - 2017
My guess is Chris intended to make a full album of covers as mentioned around the time of Higher Truth and this would nicely fit on an audio CD.... fast forward to 2020 and Vicky decided to split it into volume 1 and volume 2.... because you know, two albums is better the than one, right!!!
I was hoping this thread was full of hyperbole. Dam the production and backing tracks are.........!
So incredibly sad as this could have been really good stripped down and raw. Even BOB can’t be 100% to blame. I bet BOB and V made a great team on this album.

This begs the question - other than Euphoria Morning, which could be seen as more of a collaboration with Eleven, has Cornell ever made a compelling solo record?
There are great songs here and there. But I'm quite shocked at how bland a lot of it sounds.

Such high highs and low lows. His catalogue is so patchy.

He has moments. I think Scream is a good album, flawed, but there are some good moments there. Higher Truth also has some moments. Carry On has at least two great ones.lecherouslittlestump wrote:This begs the question - other than Euphoria Morning, which could be seen as more of a collaboration with Eleven, has Cornell ever made a compelling solo record?

It's a fair point, and frankly had he not done the "Unplugged in Sweden" set in 2006 i probably would have lost all interest in him during the Audioslave era.

Euphoria Mourning is still is masterpiece. It's a perfect record. His other solo stuff is patchy (as others have said). But after EM, the first two Audioslave records are the Cornell albums I listen to the most. I like those more than any single Soundgarden record, for example. I know I'm in the minority there. But I love Audioslave.

Audioslave was good! Not great, but good! I enjoyed all their records especially the first and third one! His solo career is all kinds of mehhhh. EM is a masterpiece and also his last masterpiece. Carry On has a couple of good songs. Scream is very flawed and not a succesfull experiment, but that's mostly Timbalands fault. Chris wrote some fine songs for 'Scream'. Higher Truth has some good songs, but like Carry on falls a bit flat at times. I also really don't like his post 2009 vocalstyle. He lost all the small nuances that made him once the GOAT. Even in the quiet songs it sounds like he's screaming.epilogue wrote:Euphoria Mourning is still is masterpiece. It's a perfect record. His other solo stuff is patchy (as others have said). Overall his pre-2000 output is far far far superior to his post-2000 output. So, his Susan Silver era >>> Vicky era....

yeah, EM is a masterpiece, untouchable. I love, love Audioslave. Their first is another masterpiece and the change they made in the third blew me away.epilogue wrote:Euphoria Mourning is still is masterpiece. It's a perfect record. Carry On is his worst album. I like Scream a lot. Higher Truth has some pretty good songs, but its kinda ruined with an awful production.

For a long time the guy's output was excellent. I enjoyed all the Audioslave albums, but it wasn't until Carry On that I really felt like the wheels came off. Then Scream happened which while being controversial, is probably a better album than Carry On.
After he died I only then listened to Songbook and Higher Truth, Songbook is a pretty great live document, and Higher Truth has some moments and feels like a sort of 'return to form'.
