Fake Empire is the answer for The National

just because it’s their most popular song doesn’t make it the right answer. it’s not necessarily representative of the entire band’s career.

I chose it because it has all the elements of what they are, not its popularity. I love System, but it's pretty specific to that record/time period. You don't really hear anything like it on earlier records, IMO whereas something like Fake Empire or Graceless could be from almost any era of the band.

I think I’d pick Slow Show (because of the outro) or Apartment Story before Fake Empire. My issue with that song is that it’s very specific to that era of the National. Their sound has evolved so much since then, and has become way more layered.
