I chose it because it has all the elements of what they are, not its popularity. I love System, but it's pretty specific to that record/time period. I think I’d pick Slow Show (because of the outro) or Apartment Story before Fake Empire. My issue with that song is that it’s very specific to that era of the National. Their sound has evolved so much since then, and has become way more layered.
