Albuquerque 2000 has a particularly good post-Jack version of Habit.

still my number one record of all time....

imagine if they sat on the Merkinball songs...

Sometimes
Hail Hail
Who You Are
In My Tree
Smile
Off He Goes
Habit
Red Mosquito
Lukin
Present Tense
I got Shit
I'm Open
Long Road

Here...move mankind and around the songs could have been b-sides/lost dogs...

If you are going to drop two songs for the Merkinball tracks you have to drop I'm Open and keep Around the Bend. Mankind would be the logical choice as the second song cut.

I'd drop Habit and Mankind.

Someone earlier in the thread described my first memory of No Code perfectly..jumping out of my ski when Hail Hail explodes after Sometimes :)

Pound for pound it has more of my favourite PJ songs than sny other record I think. Just loses its way towards the end a bit. They should have stuck Long Road and I got shit on here for sure. It'd be their masterpiece had they done so.

I'm off to reorganise my tracklist.

I'd absolutely cut Habit for All Night.

It gets tricky after that. Probably also take out Mankind and I'm Open in favor of Long Road and I Got Shit.

Probably have to do some track tweaking beyond that. Not sure how Long Road and Around the Bend bump up next to each other.

So maybe something like

Sometimes
Hail Hail
Who You Are
In My Tree
Smile
Off He Goes
All Night
Long Road
Red Mosquito
Lukin
Present Tense
I Got Shit
Around the Bend

Something like that. Yeah, that collection of songs would be my second favorite PJ album. Maybe my #1.

No code is only like 49 minutes, at least 2 songs could be added with out removing anything and still come in under an hour

I wonder/hope that the merkinball ep is covered in some form on the No Code reissue. Alternate takes or something.

Then I'd throw Mankind back in there. But I still think the album is better without Habit and I'm Open. Habit, because I personally don't like it (thought, I'd have little problem with it being left in by others) and I'm Open, because it's b-side. The song feels like a vanity track, a forced novelty that wore off pretty quickly.

Habit was the first of the token punk rockers that started showing up on their records.

I might be alone here, but I really don't hear the Merkinball tracks fitting with the No Code material.

Were they not all written around the same time? I hear ye, but they are two great songs. it'd be great if they had managed to make it on there.

Remember when PJ used to put out EP's? hehe

To me the Merkinball tracks are closer in spirit to Vitalogy than No Code. "I Got Shit" especially.

All in all, though, I prefer all of Pearl Jam's albums as they are. Most retracking attempts ultimately prove unsatisfactory.

yep, i kinda feel the same, they can be fun for something different, but they never hold up for me, especially when it includes removing some tracks, even if they arent my favorite songs, they still belong because thats how i first heard them.

im more of an overall compilation guy, ill just make compilations with a little bit of everything including b sides and stuff

Odd the way sometimes Pj's B-sides & cast offs can be better songs than those that make it. Guess a lot of them are sometimes more accessible. And they seem to rail agaist that. Still though. It's fun to mix them up a little.

infinitely more fun than listening to boots i think.

I honestly, prefer listening to No Code without Habit. Even without retracking I usually skip the song. Same with Binaural and Gods' Dice.

The digital age makes retracking a lot of fun and super easy. But the purist in me hates tampering with the artist original work. When I retrack I understand I'm not improving the art, just catering to my own preferences.

It becomes a different thing.

I'm with you, dime. I have a lot more fun retracking and mixing and matching than I do listening to boots. Always have. Even back in the ol' mixed tape days.
