It's Apple Lossless, Apple's proprietary version of FLAC.cutuphalfdead wrote:actually im downloading what they call lossless now to see what it actually is.
I'm thankful for that option, it's one less conversion step for me.

- if you pre-ordered the album through 10C you can download Sirens in MP3/FLAC from pearljam.com
Oh, and I like the song; that's clearly news.

Re: New Song (9.19.13): Sirens
WAV is a format that contains raw PCM audio. PCM is the digital standard for expressing audio as a series of 1s and 0s. CDs use another format called Red Book that also contains raw PCM audio. But WAV became the standard for computers way back in the day.
FLAC and Apple Lossless are two competing formats that more efficiently code that audio without discarding any pieces of the audio itself. That's why it's called lossless. It's a form of file compression that doesn't lose any of the actual data. It's just a more efficient way to write it.
MP3 is lossy. It takes away tiny bits of audio data and the playback algorithm guesses what those bits should sound like based on the bits surrounding them. Kind of like removing every 4th frame of a movie and having a computer redraw those frames based on what's seen in frame 3 and 5. They also chop off the frequencies which are above the audible human range. Even though you technially can't hear those frequencies, the result of losing them, along with the missing pieces that are being redrawn, is that flat, 2-dimensional sound of an mp3.

Wav
Hopefully it will suffice.
Thanks SO much for this...it sounds great! I think I like this a little more than the studio version.

Re: New Song (9.19.13): Sirens
I think this song is indicative of my place. Back when I was fantasising about being 'tissue man' every time Bridget Fonda sneezed (from any hole really), I would have hated this song. I arrived late in the album game, so my first encounter with cheddar Vedder was probably Nothingman, which got Munstered out of the of party by songs like Last Exit and Not For You. These days, whilst I still love stinky Bishops Finger, rocking, ball sweat tracks, I've surrendered to the mild, sandwich filling slices of music that sustain me through the quieter, more reflective aspects of my adult life. Cheese references aside, I can connect with a song like this more than I can with a track like Mind Your Manners. I still want to be that kid, spazzing out to dirty punk, Dairylea gargling in my throat, trying to recreate the agnst of a bunch of angry strangers. In all honesty though, that dickhead died a long time ago, and what's left is a thirty-something music fan who appreciates songs that move him on a more intimate level. Case in point, that last sentence was written in a cunty third person perspective, and I don't care. Like I don't care that I love this song. Or that 'he' loves the song. I might be a cunt for liking this song, but sometimes a cunt is a warm, safe, cheesy place to be. And I'm fine with that.

Thanks for that description. I just started downloading FLAC albums myself after discovering the major differences in quality. With headphones it's like listening to an album for the first time, even if you've been familiar with it for decades.
My next step is to try to stream through my surround system. Lossless is the way to go, you can't go back once you experience it.

Nothing beats lossless audio and a nice set of cans.
