5.7 was developed for pistol/ personal defense weapon cartridge by FN to penetrate kevlar body armor.

Pistol ammo intended to defeat body armor is prohibited. The use case projectile was never released on the US civilian market.

The 5.7 you can buy is polymer tipped whatever. Its paying for something like 5.56 hunting ammo at lower velocity/ bullet weight, but for a weird platform you overpaid for.

Alternatively, its overpaying for a Keltech equivilent in .22 magnum.

Oh, I don't think anything new is going on regarding 5.7 on a regulatory basis. Unless you bought a .223 solvent trap recently of course.

The ATF has unofficially declared a Jihad on the following:

1) AR pistols with 'braces'. They have promised forthcoming binding new interpretations for what makes a pistol brace kosher or not. They will not provide objective standards to inform owners whether they have a legit AR pistol or an SBR. They expect you to submit photos and other info to them, and they'll let you know. They claim to wave the $200 tax stamp fee for registration if you jump through their hoops.

2) 80% lowers - so far limited to Polymer80, but purchasers of their kits have been contacted. They seem to want to make home manufacture of firearms more difficult. This is semi retarded as parts kits are the more significant issue with home gunsmithing. As long as parts kits are uncontrolled, 3D printed receivers (and therefore completed guns) are getting to be fairly trivial.

3) 'Solvent Traps' - the suppressor equivalent of 80% lowers. The main benefit of these rather than finished suppressors is the ATF approval process is faster than the normal form 4, which is something like 6 months. I suppose ATFs concern is that someone, somewhere bought one of these and drilled it out without submitting a form 1.

The last time they wanted to prove their importance, a lot of innocents ended up dead. Anytime the ATF gets their panties in a knot is reason for concern.

Bringing it back to the topic at hand, the polymer bowling pins work as 'self healing' targets. The material reforms to some degree after the bullet's passage, resulting in a very small (or negligible) permanent cavity. These targets can take far more impacts than wood or paper targets that have permanent bullet cavities at least as big as the bullet diameter.

Keltech also has an abomination of a pistol that uses the FN P90 50 rd magazine (or perhaps a clone). Now that 9mm and 5.7 have achieved near parity in price, I guess the idea is that you can justify these types of purchases.
