FLAC and Apple Lossless are two competing formats that more efficiently code that audio without discarding any pieces of the audio itself. That's why it's called lossless. It's a form of file compression that doesn't lose any of the actual data. It's just a more efficient way to write it.

MP3 is lossy. It takes away tiny bits of audio data and the playback algorithm guesses what those bits should sound like based on the bits surrounding them. Kind of like removing every 4th frame of a movie and having a computer redraw those frames based on what's seen in frame 3 and 5. They also chop off the frequencies which are above the audible human range. Even though you technially can't hear those frequencies, the result of losing them, along with the missing pieces that are being redrawn, is that flat, 2-dimensional sound of an mp3.

thanks :)

Yes. And like an asshole I just bought Sirens from the 10c. But, damn if it doesn't sound amazing in Lossless format with good headphones. Ed sounds like a crackling fire. I already liked the song but it is worth it to jump through the hoops for the lossless stuff.

I think BOB deserves allot of credit for this live version. Mccready admits BOB helped him arrange the song. now I do agree that the studio is the lesser of the two but BOB deserves credit for the arrangment as much as he deserves criticism for the studio production.

YEa, its already been established they are different. I fucking love the live version. Love
I didn't mean subtle differences, I was really referring to the overall quality of the song. The studio is just too polished and over the top.

oh! Yea, fuck BOB for sure.

You didn't preorder the album through them? If you did, the download link for the single would be in your order history automatically, for free.

Nope, and I already have a rip, so yeah, I'm an idiot but usually that costs me more than a buck.

My view. Once again the band and Ed's lyrics amaze me. Did not expect this. Its majestic. So proud to have stuck with them after all these years. What a powerful song. Wow. Thank you Pearl Jam. This song is epic, acoustic guitars, effects, piano, sick lyrics, uh matt killing it, stone grooving with jeff, and of course mr.mcready just showing everybody what a class act does with a guitar. Yes!!!

After listening to this a few times, MYM came up on my ipod and I realized that I actually like Sirens better than MYM. After Sirens, MYM sounds like standard fare for PJ. Believe it or not, but Sirens is the much more ballsy move for them right now (if writing a pop song can be considered ballsy? )

10 years ago I probably would've been appalled if they tried to do something like this. But now, it really works for me big time (and I have no idea why). It feels like PJ is teaching a master class (POP401) to all those losers that devote their whole lives to writing crap for the radio but still can't seem to get that shit right. PJ get it freakin' right, even when it's not their domain, or their territory to be hanging out in. But after this, I'm not so sure that I don't want to hear some more attempts from them to "experiment" with this kind of vibe. We'll see, Sirens place within the context of the full album will be the final deciding factor. I'm just really thankful that this isn't horrible. :nice:

Just my opinion, but I think the lyrics are fantastic. Such a cool narrative for a song. I've been woken up by sirens before too. Who hasn't? I totally see how/why Ed went with this direction when he heard them. That part, at least to me, is so cool. I can see why he wrote it, he's into his wife and was thinking about the person in ambulance and the day it's him. It was a shot in the dark he heard em' and already had McCready's jam, then he went with it.

Listened on a crappy speaker on my netbook but it sounds a lot more interesting than MYM, despite my initial panic that Ed sounds like he could give Country Top 40 a try next.

- there's a video of the band playing the song live (in a studio, anyway)
- if you pre-ordered the album through 10C you can download Sirens in MP3/FLAC from pearljam.com

Oh, and I like the song; that's clearly news.
You like this shit?
About 96% of Spenno's brain is made up of wailing, unmusical guitar feedback and deliberately abrasive white noise, but there is a very vocal portion of that 4% that is responsible for his seemingly anomalous embrace of songs like "Sirens" and TV shows like "Gilmore Girls" and "Bunheads." It rises to the surface without much sense of consistency but does so sternly and demands to be seen, not unlike a Whack-a-Mole. For that reason Spenno is one of my go-to RM'ers; I never miss a thread wherein his name appears in the "last post" column, much the same as I can never walk through a Chuck E. Cheese's without making a pit stop at Whack-a-Mole.

Ripped it using Audacity and Soundflower etc...

Wav

Hopefully it will suffice.
Thanks for getting this up so quick

I noticed a glitch around 2:43 so I uploaded another version demuxed directly from the youtube mp4 file.

Unfortunately this pure version still has the MYM intro at the end so I also converted to WAV to edit it out and up the volume by a few dB while I was at it:

Without any commentary from me, my wife laughed and rolled her eyes when I played her this video.
