My initial impression was "well that definitely sounds like Eddie Vedder singing but that doesn't sound like Pearl Jam at all." The best song to compare in that way after my first listen was the Other Side. It's going to take some time for me to form an opinion. Right now I don't particularly feel strong about Sirens either way but I can see it growing on me. I can also see it getting commercial radio play and the casual Pearl Jam fan liking it a lot more than we do.

I sent the link to a few friends who like the occasional pearl jam song but aren't fans to see what they think. They would not have the 'I started listening to pearl jam to get away from songs like this' baggage all of us went into this with.

Hear the sirens.
Hear the circus, so profound.
I hear the sirens
more and more in this here town.

Let me catch my breath to breathe
and reach across the bed.
Just to know we're safe,
I am a grateful man.
This light has been alive
and I can see you clear:
how to take your hand
and feel your breath,
for fear this someday will be over.
I pull you close, so much to lose
knowing that nothing lasts forever.
I didn't care before you were here.
I danced with laughter,
with the ever-after.
But all things changed. Let this remain.

Hear the sirens covering distance in the night.
The sound echoing closer,
will they come for me next time?
Oh every choice, mistake I've made, it's not my plan
to send you in the arms of another man.
And if you choose to stay, I'll wait, I'll understand.

It's a fragile thing, this life we lead.
If I think too much, I can get over-
whelmed by the grace by which we live
our lives with death over our shoulders.
Want you to know that should I go,
I always loved you, held you high above too.
I study your face; the fear goes away.

It's a fragile thing, this life we lead.
If I think too much, I can't get over-
whelmed by the graves by which we live
our lives with death over our shoulders.
Want you to know that should I go,
I always loved you, held you high above too.
I study your face, and the fear goes away.
The fear goes away.
The fear goes away.
The fear goes away.
I think those are right. Anymore tweaks, let me know.

Yes Biff. I felt little on my first 2-3 listens but 10 in, plus the video and I'm hooked. It's still only 3.5* but that's enough for me.

I feel it'll be like Gomez' "We Haven't Turned Around". It won't be massive but it could have longevity.

I think 'grace' is 'graves' at one point, but I may be wrong about that too.

that was about 5 minutes ago. I shall report back with results. Fortunately they can type through all the cheese.

I thought it could be 'held you high above true' but maybe that doesn't make sense.

Yeah it does sound a bit like 'true'... I don't really expect Ed to make much sense, only to live in the present tense.

OK... but don't take the piss out of all of my posts over some band, please. Trying to ask you politely but it's getting a bit much and other forum members will take it on the chin better than me.

That's the bit that frustrates me because the lyrics should go all Pink Floyd / Sgt. Peppers at that point and they don't. :? It sounds like he started with the intention of writing some really trippy shit and it gradually changed into a love song.

Harm, you're an extremely good person.
Please keep in mind that all I say is tongue-in-cheek at the worst.

I think he means that in the messy spectacle way, rather than elephants and clowns. But who knows. This is where a concept video would have been so helpful!

And that's not a bad thing at all. The whole idea of hearing the sirens more and more because with age you become more and more aware of that fact that one day you can just suddenly go and tear a hole in your loved ones' souls is worth a lot more than trippiness for the sake of trippiness.

I'm hearing profound circus too but I think it fits.
Especially if the story about it being written In a motel room with sirens being heard in the distance is true.
