Re: Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
The leia lines. Theyre so fucking bad. 1) this scene is fucking pointless 2) its angering that this is all they gave rose 2) the two leia lines contradict eachother in mood and style and its so fucking hamfisted that it leads me to once again believe that JJ just didnt give a shit about this movie come time to make it happen."General we're getting reports of a raid at the festival of ancestors"
Leia: "General this mission is everything we cannot fail!!!" "Any words from rey?"
"The falcon is not responding"
Rose: "Ugh, do you have to say it like that!"
Leia "Do me a personal favor, try and be optimistic!!"
"Yes mam, this is terrific, you're not gonna believe how this is gonna turn out"
Its all just so...disappointing. Yea, i can turn my brain off completely and let this fly by but ....geezes. This is bad.

The way this move plays out ....
You didn’t even need to have the force awakens or last Jedi. Yes there are threads that connect them all but really they could have just had this movie standalone.

Disagree. Thematically, this movie doesn't work without the other two.Strat wrote:The way this move plays out ....

Of course you'll say it doesn't work anyway...

That's sort of the risk/reward in using old footage.Strat wrote:The leia lines. They were very much confined by what hey had of Carrie there. Be fair.
Calibrate your enthusiasm

Exactly. Given what they chose to do and what they had to work with I think what they delivered was pretty great. And it meant that fans got Carrie as Leia one last time.dimejinky99 wrote:They were very much confined by what hey had of Carrie there. Be fair.

It works - kind of -I just dont like it. I loved it upon first theater viewing but it doesnt hold up. I hate that im the one bashing a star wars movie because i fucking loved the ST until this one.epilogue wrote:Disagree. I think they chose poorly with continuing with a leia storyline. Its super unfortunate she passed but i think the movie could have been better if they wrote her out off screen.
With Fisher passing they could have concentrated on Poe becoming the leader of the resistance. This would have been a perfect opportunity to continue building on him being primed to be a leader in the last jedi. That is following the story line and character developments. Poe finally fully commits to leadership and having to make the hard decisions for the resistance. Instead, JJ went with forcing leia into the film. She doesn't really do much other than tug at our heart strings. Yea, sure, she reached to ben then gave way to the force. But Han Solo already plays that same role for ben.
Its all just super forced and when you add on the super fake out emotional trickery of losing chewie, or 3po's memory being wiped, its like JJ doesnt actually respect the audience or had the guts to really dig into the characters.
It all the main bullet points of star wars, but its so flimsy and disappointing.
Im sorry guys, im not trying to convince you its bad. Just discussing!

Very true it was their choice. Carrie died when they still had plenty of time to rework the Last Jedi so Luke lived and Leia died. Instead they stuck with it and made a dead actor a major part of the next film. They put themselves in that box.

The Leia stuff in TROS is awful and jarring, but I have no idea how they could've handled it given the circumstances. Maybe having her die between movies would have been better. I don't know.

She dies in space and Luke doesn't disappear at the end of Last Jedi. Problem solved.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
If they had time to recut it, they could have had her die in the explosion. She served no purpose through the rest of last Jedi. You would have lost that scene between her and Luke at the end, but that would probably have been better than those scenes with her in tros.bada wrote:epilogue wrote:Exactly. You don't even have to have kept Luke alive. There's no reason for either of them to be alive in Rise of Skywalker. Especially if you decide not to call it rise of Skywalker

Reworking TLJ wasn't really an option. Rian had a story to tell and he was able to tell it.bada wrote:epilogue wrote:Exactly. The fans put them in a box. There was no right answer after Carrie died. If they recast, fans would freak. If they killed Leia off screen, fans would freak. If they pulled a Tarkin, fans would freak.
The found a creative compromise that they believed was the least of all evils. They took the limitations that choice presented and ran with it. For better or worse.

Leia is far more important to Ben's journey than Luke.

Fair, but because of her death she didn't do much to help his journey in TROS.epilogue wrote:Leia is far more important to Ben's journey than Luke.

It could be argued that her reaching out to him with the Force, the ultimate sacrifice she makes, is the thing that turns Ben. Therefore, it could be argued that she did everything to help his journey in TROS.B wrote:Fair, but because of her death she didn't do much to help his journey in TROS.epilogue wrote:Leia is far more important to Ben's journey than Luke.

Well shit. They shouldnt be a slave to the fans. They should be a slave to their story. LIke Rian Johnson was and that is why i absolutely love last jedi.epilogue wrote:Reworking TLJ wasn't really an option. This is why i very much dislike JJ's approach to both TFA and TROS. He's a slave to the fans and surface level star wars points.
It worked for TFA but not for Skywalker.

See the problem here? JJ and cheap emotional trickery.
That is what saddens me about this movie.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
LIke why didnt JJ explore the relationship Ben had with Snoke? If Palpatine were behind it all along, then perhaps a storyline discovering how palpatine was behind Snoke and how Snoke was able to manipulate ben for so long may have been the turning point for ben.
