I'm fairly sure I've made this point before, but I think Nirvana (and Kurt in particular) would maybe have benefited from a more protective manager in the Elliot Roberts/Kelly Curtis mould, not some LA-based entertainment agency of which they were one of many clients.VinylGuy wrote:Why not?Birds in Hell wrote:Sonic Youth did have a significant role in Nirvana's path to mainstream success, encouraging them to sign not only with their label (Geffen) but their management company (Gold Mountain). I think Kurt was always fucked. He seemed to be super childish and difficult even when he wasnt a star, while Ed, Jeff and Stone seemed super grounded and hard working. Thats why they got Kelly i presume.

I'm listening to a boot from lollapalooza '95 today. I think one of you shared this at one point. Maybe even in this thread.
I love this set. Heavy on Jet Set and WM tracks, with a trek through some really early stuff towards the end of the set.
Steve Shelley sure brings a heavier sound to the live sets, doesn't he?
Not sure which show date this was.
Cotton Crown
Self-Obsessed and Sexxee
Bull in the heather
Starfield Road
Washing Machine
Unwind
Saucer-like
Teenage Riot
Becuz
World Looks Red
Confusion is Next
Diamond Sea

This version of teen age riot sounds just out of tune enough for me to think it was intentional.

A chip off the old block!
Also, Trag, I love Pattern Recognition so much.

On it. Give me a day or two and tell me what your least favorite song is on Rather Ripped so I have an idea where not to go.Strat wrote:Somebody create a Sonic Youth playlist for me.

Re: Sonic Youth is fuckin amazing!
I couldn't wait.
This on the fly playlist is something I just threw together at work (slow night.) I left so much off, especially a lot of obvious and "catchy" ones. I was going for more of an actual SY album experience (healthy mix of thurston and kim, with one or two Lee songs in the mix.)
I also somewhat took what I know of strat's taste into consideration. Track two is famously described by Neil Young as "the best guitar track of all time" for instance. Youth Against Facism was recorded in the Bush Sr. years but it absolutely applies today. I predict it to be one of your favorites, Strat.
I left off Androgynous Mind (daughter tag!) which, considering this is for strat and that's kind of a PJ reference, is my bad. Whoops. At least I got one Jet Set song on there. Underrated album and not too loved by many fans. I think trag and KD are both fans of that album though. So am I.
Mostly I just love the way this mix flows and I hope it doesn't scare you off too much. Some of these songs are rather long, but they stay interesting. I tried to make the mix not so violent either, but that's a big part of their sound, pre Rather Ripped. I think it definitely needs one or two more Lee songs on there. Maybe one day I'll just make a Lee mix. He's his own thing, and for the purpose of this mix, just didn't fit.
Actually, I think I'm going to make a second mix altogether, taking casual listening and re-listening into more consideration. That one will definitely have Androgynous Mind on it for Strat's PJ bug. It will also have Candle on it (another PJ reference in there.) This mix will take more time and thought.
In the meantime, hope you enjoy!

Though you don't seem to like The King of Limbs, so you might be too idiotic to enjoy this expert mix.

Yeah, about halfway through making it I realized I was just making it for me, and maybe you too. All this Albini I've been listening to lately must have sunk in because even after I realized I was doing it I just had to see the whole, uncompromised vision through. Strat's enjoyment be damned.tragabigzanda wrote:I’m fully on board with like half of Reid’s playlist, and think the other half is just awful for trying to sell someone on the band

Strat, have you listened to this yet? I'm actually kind of proud of it and would love to hear your thoughts, but NB that I do regret kicking off an introductory mix with Expressway (aka Madonna, Sean & Me.) I really blew the exploding load there...

I'd definitely look forward to hearing it.
VG, what's your opinion of Paper Cut Exit? I really want to work it into a mix.
