Yes but they’d lose senate seats in 2022.

In 2016, the Republican Party had a ten seat majority in the senate and a 47 seat advantage in the House. In 2018, there were ten contested Senate seats where a Democrat incumbent was defending in Trump territory, and just one Republican in the reverse. Nevertheless, in 4 years they’ve lost both chambers and the presidency...a feat unheard of in nearly a century.

In 2022, meanwhile, Republicans are the ones facing a ton of precarious senate seats up for re-election. Democrats, less so.

Abandoning Trump means getting primaried by fanatics and, in the near term, probably means low turnout. But there’s no evidence that sticking with him is worth anything beyond regional victories...certainly not when it comes to purple Senate seats.

They’re in a tough spot, but they need to be making strategic decisions about a more distant future than 2022.

If the future nominee is sitting on congress right now, and that nominee voted to impeach, it would go a long way in showing character and reason. I'd vote for that if I also believed in a fair amount of this politician's platform. This mind exercise also assumes a lot of things about what will happen in this country with two years of a dem controlled federal government, which I'd weigh with this politician's platform.

In other words, can you show me a politician in 2022 who can run on a limited federal government, a fair but common sense response to what I anticipate to be an escalating culture war, AND it turns out they did the right thing at this weird moment in history and voted to impeach? Sign me up.

I can count on one hand the number of republicans I've voted for in my life. Trump was a hard pass for me in 2016, and a joke by 2020.

I'm a latent free market libertarian type, if I had to guess. Culturally, I lean left but can't fully get behind the current woke-ism/SJW tendencies like in my younger days. Perhaps I'm an example of that classic phrase, "when you're young and conservative, you've lost your heart. When you're old and liberal, you've lost your mind."

I might add that Bastiat and Hazlitt are key influences to this post. I'd love to read more and my mind is undergoing constant reprograming when new data and experience comes into the picture, but these thinkers were the big drivers for me in the year of our virus, 2020.

A man known for making great coaching decisions has made a great one away from the football field.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick has decided to decline the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

“Recently, I was offered the opportunity to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which I was flattered by out of respect for what the honor represents and admiration for past recipients,” Belichick said in a statement issued Monday night. “Subsequently, the tragic events of last week occurred and the decision has been made not to move forward with the award.

“Above all, I am an American citizen with great reverence for our nation’s value, freedom and democracy. I know I also represent my family and the New England Patriots football team. One of the most rewarding things in my professional career took place in 2020 when, through the great leadership within our team, conversations about social justice, equality and human rights moved to the forefront and became actions. Continuing those efforts while remaining true to the people, team and country I love outweigh the benefit of any individual award.”

I appreciate that much of this sort of stuff with professional sportsmen and women is simply throwing the "right words" at current issues from (mostly) positions of wealth and security, but even still I'm a bit of a sucker for it.
