Seriously, that's why you think Aussie is doing as well as it is. Not because it is geographically isolated, sparsely populated with a generally warm climate and your government had the good sense to stop international travel. Not to sound like Verb but money does not stop a virus from spreading. It helps you pay rent and put food on the table, and that has nothing to do with stopping a virus.

directly no it doesnt

however if you get supplemental income that covers your rent/utilities/food/etc and you do not have to go work in a bar/food service where you are in constant contact with people it can help to slow the spread from that aspect

Oh that is fucked up. No way was it ever $2,000 total.

Why can't anyone just speak straightforward truth?
After Trump made his demand that it should be $2,000 the House immediately passed a bill to increase the check to $2,000. It wasn't a bill that would have made it $2,600 total. It would have either been a single $2,000 check or the initial $600 check followed by an additional $1,400.

The bill the House had been advocating for before Trump's comments was for a $2,000 check. At the risk of choking on my own words I don't think they're actually being deceptive here.
It was exactly the bold as I recall.
And what happened after this? Just before the Georgia runoff, Democrats were promising $2000 checks, not $1400 ones (which the media was also happy to promote).

The insistence on only looking at what happened before that is completely deceptive.

For the record, no I don't think the financial support is the only reason we are doing well. Of course our geographical and social advantages are the real reason. Seriously, no where else I'd rather be in the world for a pandemic than Perth Western Australia - literally the most isolated capital city in the world.

My point though is that I believe our governments are there to support us as a society when we need that support. This pandemic is when we needed it.

A base income means a decent percentage of people don't have to physically go to work. This really allows you to slow spread.

The US was never going to be able to contain this thing, but it didn't have to be this bad. Verbs right, you can't stop it. But you could control it much better than has been.

But fuck, if I had no option but to go to work to pay my mortgage, then hell yeah, that's exactly what I'm doing.

I don't know how much $$ would be enough, but Higgs is certainly right to say our government failed us here in the US. Most relief for people/unemployed ran out mid-summer (the fed supplement).

Our failures are also because we will die for freedom. Literally and pointlessly. We are bad at following rules here, mostly because we don't like them. Under a better government we would have been helped more economically, and that would have been great. But I have my doubts that the death count would be much different.

It's not the government's role to take care of anyone (and you really don't want it to), but when you force closures and shut down the economy, you also have to pay for the repercussions of that.

One of the few places a government actually needs to step in strongly is during a disaster. People tend to have a hard time managing those themselves. This is the same, if not much worse, than massive hurricanes/flooding/wildfires. We tend to not leave people in the lurch with those, probably shouldn't do the same with a deadly virus.

Don't kid yourselves, government response is a huge part of this. Yes it is easier for Taiwan/Australia/etc. to keep the virus out, but it still made it in. What they did after that on a national and personal level made a huge difference. In places like Taiwan people wore masks when they were sick way before covid hit. There is a level of personal and community conscience there that is just totally impossible in America.

it isn't the government taking care of anyone; the government doesn't make money. they've mismanaged funds supplied to them by the people, for the people.

this would have been a good time to test UBI to see how it would have helped people during the pandemic.

Just on the underlined point, this did have a significant impact on how successfully the Antipodean countries managed the pandemic, and it was certainly unusual at the time:
