This is a great thread, tree. Completely agree with your takes on this style.

For the male equivalent, what about Calvin Harris' "Summer"? Even though, I actually like the tune, probably because of the music. But, that vocal style seems present.

Calvin Harris' "Summer" absolutely sucks, but I think for different reasons. Not sure this qualifies as indie girl.

Bright Eyes/Conor Oberst certainly has his own indie vocal style that is oft emulated, but I don't really think it's the male equivalent of the indie girl voice as personified by bands like Sylvan Esso.
