First, we were discussing sales as a proxy for ranking albums. He thought it wasn't a good one and I asked to suggest better. I said a survey would probably best. There was no response to that, but then (as one can see above) it was implied that the only reason Backspacer had better sales was because of “hits”. I responded that yeh - RA didn’t have any hits. Then somehow the quality factor was brought into play, he claimed the quality was better on RA.
So, yes, I still say there was an implication within the entire context that radio hits are NOT synonymous with high quality. At the very least this was implied with Backspacer. So, to find out, I asked the question using another example with Adele (rolling in the deep example), which was ignored.
That's pretty much where we are.
I say - anyone who thinks songs are higher quality because they played less on the radio is an idiot. And further anyone who thinks an album is higher quality because it has no radio hits is an idiot too.
I'll break it down:
Sales do not equate quality as you have suggested.
Backspacer sold more because it was promoted more and had radio success.
I think Riot Act is a more quality album in terms of musicianship.
I just happen to enjoy Backspacer more for the qualities that made it more radio friendly.
I don't always like more radio friendly attributes but in this case I do.
If I was asked to rank based on quality I would put RA ahead .
If I was asked which I enjoyed more to listen to it would be BS.
Is that better?
Honestly, it's fine. But, kinda seems like a cop out.
To like one better in terms of quality, but enjoy the other more.... just seems well, ummm... odd.
