The people in power keep reminding us of this "not proven to stop transmissibility" for a reason. Some of them rather enjoy the lockdowns and disruptions to normal life.

In Weingarten's case, this might just be a bargaining tactic with the Biden admin: bailout local school districts or we'll make things painful for you.

Some people like being petty scolds and enjoy that power. Puritans might have traded their Christianity for whatever this new faith is, but they didn't give up the rest of Puritanism.

Agree that a weird underlying Puritanism continues to exist in the US, but suggesting a radical and influential enough demographic of such thinking is out there handing down economically crippling lockdowns is Qanon level conspiracy theorizing.

The lockdowns are just political hackery. It's not part of some grand scheme.

What jumps out at you as the most successful intervention by a governor so far?

i just think most if not all the governors are desperately trying to give their people the best chance for survival with as few as complications as possible and they arent looking to shutdown businesses just to piss people off

maybe im a little naive

*scientifically supported intervention

LA county admitted they had no scientifically based justification to shut down outdoor dining, they just wanted to discourage people from leaving their homes.

I don't interpret the flailing most governors are doing with worrying about safety as much as trying to save face somehow politically. Where is the hard evidence restaurants drive the spread for example? Or schools? It's not really there but if you're playing politics you make the move to restrict them because the deaths are coming anyway and you can't give them an excuse to come for your head.

What is going to happen in 5 years when a virus comes out of China with a 50%% death rate and very high communicable rate? Will all of the anti-mask, anti-shutdown folks just not believe it and go out and die? I feel like even if some of these precautions for COVID were "overdone" that they have already done harm in my scenario above. Or, I guess I should say the people that think this is all a government conspiracy have harmed themselves if the above scenario ever happens.

If a legitimately scary virus breaks out I'm just going to kill myself because it's very clear society will collapse anyway based on our comical response to covid.

1 in 500 South Dakotans has died of covid. If every state had suffered losses comparable to that, the national death toll would be approaching 700,000.

By comparison, one out of 1,800 people in Washington state have died of covid. Apply that nationally, and you have fewer than 200,000 dead.

Whatever else you want to say about it, mitigation is not without consequence.

If anything, getting owned that hard by a disease that mostly transmits via close indoor contact in a 70,000 square mile state with fewer people than Columbus, Ohio in it is a testament to how much they fucked it up.
