I'll take winter running over summer any day. Only advantage summer has is fewer clothes to put on/less time to get out the door.

I think I found a route with a mix of earthy terrain and concrete that I can live with. There was a hole in the fence of the park I run in, which led to a trodden bike path along the drainage ditch through my neighborhood, then over a bridge to an easement between the ditch and some residential areas before putting me back on a road thoroughfare. I ran it yesterday and ended up having to navigate around a fenced off apartment complex, which added some miles. Unfortunately I don't know how much it added because I stopped to get my bearings and my auto-resume on Strava wasn't triggering for some reason. Kind of a mini adventure. I would end up dead on actual trails, probably, but it was a lot of fun breaking up the routine.

Those of you who off-road regularly...do you often wonder if this will be the run that you come across some human remains or a killer in hiding?

Ha. Haven't seen one yet, but it's always a possibility when I run the bayou greenways. I signed up for a race here a couple of years ago that promised gators, but I ended up having to back out. I've hiked in that park before and there are literally alligators blocking your path in segments close to the water. They're harmless if you respect them.

I was really into running back in like...2004...and in August I deployed with my guard unit to Uzbekistan. When we arrived the base commander put restrictions on everyone from going off base. I was only there for a few months and the restrictions weren't lifted until after we'd left. I made friends/running partners with a couple guys from West Virginia, one of them a guy in his mid-50s, who could run forever it seemed. The base had a paved path that ran along the perimeter, and we'd go for a run during lunch along that path. One day we were out on a run, far from any buildings or tents, and something squirmed in the road just about 15yds ahead of us. We stopped, and it stopped. Then it popped up and bowed its head out. It was a cobra.

Some of the locals worked on the base, and I'd seen one of them just manhandle a cobra like it was nothing. I am not that guy. Not then. Not ever.

We stood there in the road for a moment, and my partner was like, hey let's just head back. It's been a good run. We slowly backed away, and it took off.

Fortunately, that was my only encounter with a snake on a run since then.

Similar story here. I ran on some West Texas roads early in the AM last summer. I'm such a wuss that I donned jeans and boots to walk the 200 yards across the brushy landscape around our cabin just to get to the road for fear of rattlesnakes, then shed the layers when I was out in the open. Still saw a baby snake on the highway while running and almost shit myself.

Like a machete should be an easy kill but even if I just had a shovel or rock I would be super anxious

Do people on your route run? Once you catch the first sight of some lycra spandex and running shoes whizzing by you, your dopamine feedback loop will trigger from FOMO and then off you'll go.

if i go to the greenway there are a decent amount, but when i go up and down all the surrounding streets it's almost all walkers

i walked two today, then jogged/walked two...my pace was 10:35 - about the same as the 3 miles i did a few days ago :/...there were a few hills, but i also came down them so a little hurt a little help
