I don't necessarily hate the result, but these songs are more than just influenced. Shit, Roger Waters could take over vocals for Ed on Sirens, and you might not even notice.

I kind of feel like that's the way a lot of songwriters write; they may just be willing to say who they're ripping off.

I completely agree. Maybe if your talking about like rogers led Floyd like Mother or something on the final cut or Gilmour led Floyd in the 90s and such (which I don't really know at all) this could sound like it. Actually I take this back. This sounds nothing like Mother. Also like Pink Floyd is dark side of the moon! and meddle! and wish you were here and those albums. This song bears absolutely no resemblance to Pink Floyd when it was really Pink Floyd. I could see it maybe being like a Lady Gaga song though!digster wrote:Maybe this is me not playing really well-versed in Floyd, but I don't hear much of them in Sirens at all. I don't doubt that's where it started, but I don't feel like that's where it ended up.

But why is a band with a long back catalog of original music suddenly writing [purposefully?] derivative stuff?digster wrote:I kind of feel like that's the way a lot of songwriters write; they may just be willing to say who they're ripping off.

Because it takes more effort than what they are willing to give at this point in their lives to churn out something original.B wrote:But why is a band with a long back catalog of original music suddenly writing [purposefully?] derivative stuff?digster wrote:I kind of feel like that's the way a lot of songwriters write; they may just be willing to say who they're ripping off.

I really don't agree with you here. I think that Mike can say that he was inspired by Pink Floyd, but I don't think the band goes into the studio and says, "Man, let's turn that cool Mike riff into a copycat Floyd song!"B wrote:Anyone else find it weird that this band that is damn near HoF induction is just making songs to sound like other artists?

Music is hard to describe, so artists will often compare their music to other songs/artists as references. That's really all it is. I personally only hear Pearl Jam in Pearl Jam's music...even when they compare their music to other artists' stuff.

Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
Before you guys start calling the songs derivative, why not wait to hear the full album. We have yet to hear Infallible, Pendulum, Yellow Moon and My Fathers Son, which by most accounts are going to be the most experimental (and best ) songs on the album, excluding MFS which nobody can seem to describe.
To me, Sirens has a little bit of a Pink Floyd influence, in that the solo sounds very Gilmour'ish. Everything else about it is more standard soft country love ballad stuff with a full bodied Vedder. I absolutely love the song by the way, and cannot wait to hear it live. I hope they extend the solo .

However, influenced by and derivative aren't always the same thing. Swallowed Whole is probably influenced by REM. It's not derivative.

Honestly I think at this point you guys are just pulling stuff out of your asses and saying this sounds like pink FLoyd because someone in the band said that at some point or something. If no one from the band had mentioned that, this comparison wouldn't even be on peoples minds! This sounds super condescending but have any of you ever even listened to Pink Floyd that hasn't been covered by Pearl Jam?!Vindicator wrote:Before you guys start calling the songs derivative, why not wait to hear the full album.
