I've only ever used Wacom stuff, so i can't speak to the alternatives. But none of my Wacoms have ever died on me or given me problems. They're worth the price if you can afford them.

I've had my Cintiq for about 8 years and its still going strong. It had a dead pixel when I bought it, which is usually a very bad sign, but I haven't had any problems with it. The driver updates are shitty sometimes, but I haven't had any trouble lately.

I've used everything from little Bamboos to the giant Cintiq HDs, and they are all pretty sturdy.

I like the Intuos tablets, but a lot of people find it weird to look at a monitor while you draw on the desk. I think most can get used to it in a couple weeks. They are actually better on my back. And they are cheap.

I guess the Wacom One is their new entry level Cintiq-like ones. Don't know much about it, but it's probably better than the one I use now.

But for most people, an iPad with Procreate would probably be plenty. Unless you want to run Photoshop, it probably has everything you need to play around with.
