Non-fans generally remember Jeremy or something off of Ten. I don't see how Pearl Jam is perceived to be a band that could write Sirens. I guess that's a perception about the non-fans here, more than anything else.Birds in Hell wrote:Agreed (and that's an excellent, and accurate, point about the perception of the band among non-fans).Fuzzcharger wrote:Neither do I. A minority in what sense? I have no idea what point you're trying to make.Release_Me wrote:Nowhere did I imply that polls should tell you what you should or shouldn't like. Good for them? I don't think anyone's claiming that nobody found the song in some sense unexpected on first listen.Release_Me wrote:And many of the posters around here did an about face once they got around to accepting that indeed Pearl Jam did this. I posted earlier that I feel the song is influenced more heavily by Pearl Jam's cover of Mother than it is the Pink Floyd original. Do you think that's an irrelevant observation?Release_Me wrote:It sounds nothing like they've ever done before. I don't get any of the comparisons with their own songs. I don't know what to say other than the polls show more people like the song than those who don't. There's no other point.Birds in Hell wrote:A minority in what sense? And regarding the unexpected nature of the song, that's the point I was alluding to originally. It was so unexpected that many people took time to wrap their heads around it. I'm one of them. I couldn't decide what I felt about this song for the first few listens. I came around, as did many others. Some still haven't because they can't stand this type of song or just don't care for it, while some choose to simply not accept it as a Pearl Jam song.
Pearl Jam is the only band I'll spend money on.

I'm just saying it is nothing like Pearl Jam's own previous songs. I have no idea why you keep responding to something that was never meant as a question or even an opinion. It's an observation and fact. The polls say Sirens is perceived favourably here. That's it. No rocket science.

I still can't fathom what relevance that has to the discussion at hand but I doubt there's much to be gained by chewing it over further.
It feels as though you're countering an argument nobody is making.

I'm gonna go listen to Crown of Thorns and think about how wrong I am. Enjoy the Sirens, guys.

This song is more divisive than about a hundred Fixers and more controversial than a thousand Targets.

Re: New Song (9.19.13): Sirens
By all accounts, it actually seems to be getting a really positive response. But for some reason THIS is the song that the masses in the PJ community have decided to get the pitchforks out over to chase down the non-believers.dimejinky99 wrote:This song is more divisive than about a hundred Fixers and more controversial than a thousand Targets.
Seriously, it's cool how many of you like it. And those who I've discussed it with, well I consider them to be discerning listeners and I have no doubt that their enthusiasm for the song is genuine.
I just don't think it's very good. At all. And I think those who have discussed music with me know that I'm a pretty discerning listener myself, and not someone who is trying to make a point or put up a front.

I do find it funny that some people are so insecure in their own tastes.

I sometimes think people here only like rhythmic things that butt up against each other in a cool kind of way because Stone Gossard also does.

This song is not the bestest most awesomest ditty ever but nor is it the most detestable piece of shit tweezered from Satan's buttocks. Nuance, people. Some of the responses here have been laughably OTT.

Re: New Song (9.19.13): Sirens
Just my experience obviously but I haven't seen anyone outside of this fanbase think this song is a left turn for the band. I've heard people say it's classic pearl jam, I've heard others say it's the typical bland stuff that middle-aged rock band come up with, but I haven't seen anyone shocked at this being a Pearl Jam as some people seem to be around here.Release_Me wrote:Non-fans generally remember Jeremy or something off of Ten. Because its big, emotional and cheesy. Like a lot of ten and what a lot of people assume pearl jam always sound like.
I still think its bombastic, overproduced, with bland musak and sounds a bit like Kelly clarkson. All IMO of course.
