But practically speaking, free speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences? Ok, fine. I just want to know what the consequences in this particular case should be. Otherwise, saying "free speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences" is just hot air.

edit: Should the consequences be that she is fired and the masses should celebrate? And in doing so grant people with already immense power over you even more power?

it is not up to me to decide the consequences nor is it up to you. it is up to her employer. while she is a private citizen she is hardly a normal private citizen she has just over 725K followers. her words/thoughts carry a little more weight than the average person

It's up to everyone to decide those consequences for themselves, you loon (and yes that includes the CEO of Disney). But look at the practical, real-world effects of this particular consequence. The consequence is that it becomes normalized that your boss (not just hers, but yours) can fire you because he didn't like something you said off the clock. Why would this be acceptable to you? What a bizarre thing to actively promote.

Seems like a far more reasonable response should be "hey, maybe lay off of twitter for a bit, we aren't quite to death camps yet" and then go about your day like a sane person.

but the CEO of Disney thinks she should be fired. The agency that represents her thinks it should drop her. Ok then. The response from the masses should be to show some shred of solidarity and self preservation and punish them for this very obvious overreaction.

And her follower count means nothing to me. You don't lose rights because you have followers in the six figures.

All these years later, this is the "cancellation" I think of most. A 2-3 minute silent, non-disruptive protest ended up being the incident that made me, personally, realize that some people in my real, personal life are actually f'n nuts. Not "nuts" like we all accuse some people of being, but actually "screws loose" nuts.

Ironically, if she’d tweeted that in Germany she’d be in prison quick time. Not just yesterday’s one but her previous anti trans tweets.
They take hate speech really seriously and online.

Twitter and Facebook are also stepping up crackdowns on covid conspiracy and anti vaccine and anti mask posts.
Being a bigot and whipping up her base against trans people, and the covid denial of it all
is putting peoples lives in real danger and her ‘free speech’ rights doesn’t trump that.

Disney didn’t fire her. Lucasfilm did. Apparently all they said was she no longer working on Star Wars. Everything else is just people layering it on. Including Favreau going to bat for her with Lucasfilm last year, so she’s let him down most of all apart from herself.
Her Agent has also dumped her it seems so it looks like she’s had plenty of advice and chances to quit this and didn’t. So here are the consequences of her own actions.

Her family own one of the biggest casino groups in the world and she’s an heiress it seems? I doubt she’ll be much affected by any of this. It’s probably that insulation from reality and consequences that has her thinking she can say stuff like this with no repercussions.


She can’t act worth a fuck anyways. Timothy Olyphant made more of an impression on one episode than she made in her episodes total. Fuck, even frog lady did. And was more likeable.

My guess is she had a contract. Most contracts have a clause about how you represent the brand/company. Break the clause and they have a right to term you

There are definitely workplace rights issues here, in terms of the reasonable limits around actions by employers against employees, who in the overwhelming majority of circumstances where such matters arise are people who don’t have the fame, money and other resources of a Hollywood actor.

Are you comfortable with the idea of being sacked for indiscreet comments on social media, should the wind blow in that particular way one day?
