I sing All Apologies to my son often when I'm trying to get him to sleep. The outro lyrics can go on forever if you let them. Makes for a good lullaby.

This seems like a bold statement (there are a few AIC songs on Facelift that I bet would trounce it), but "Pennyroyal Tea" is definitely one of my least favorite Nirvana songs.tragabigzanda wrote:Pennyroyal Tea is the worst song to come out of the grunge era
I give it a few bonus points for namedropping Leonard Cohen, though, so that I was primed to be curious about him when I heard him referenced later. For some reason, when I first heard his name in that song (at age 12), I automatically assumed 'Leonard Cohen' was the name of a hoity-toity alcoholic beverage.

Pennyroyal Tea gets too much hate. Might not be among the better songs on In Utero but one of the easiest to digest in a hard to digest album. It’s a great album but that doesn’t make it easy to listen to.

It's just such a dull composition. Too much of the song lingers on that drawn-out B-flat chord ("Pennyroyal TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEA," "inside of MEEEEEEEEEEEEE") -- I don't usually care for the criticism that a song "goes nowhere" but this is one of those for me, it just feels like it constantly steers itself back into this same completely unsatisfying musical brick wall.liebzz wrote:Pennyroyal Tea gets too much hate. The "steal the life that's inside of me" line is too on the nose. I like my abortion songs more ambiguous.

To absolutely no one's surprise, I love Pennyroyal Tea. I can't necessarily argue with what you're saying. But I guess I like those qualities in this song. *shrugs*Kevin Davis wrote:It's just such a dull composition. Re: I Feel Stupid And Contagious / A Nirvana Thread
Yeah, I don’t remember hating any songs on In Utero. Really I loved all their albums and treated Incesticide as one as well. I always thought the weakest link for them were recordings of live shows, mostly because they went from phenomenal to unlistenable, and there’s no rhyme, reason or natural progression to where you could guess that might happen. Not that I am looking for predictable in a live show, and the danger of everything crashing and burning is I am sure really exciting when you are there and watching living on that line, but in recordings it eventually becomes frustrating. No one’s fault per se but reality. When they were on though, they were great.

When I start to get too nitpicky about a Kurt Cobain song not “going somewhere” I just remind myself that he was a suicidal heroin addict
