i just saw this..what the hell is the matter with you?tragabigzanda wrote:I listened to Sketches of Spain last night for the first time in years, and I've got to say I think that record is highly overrated. Doesn't do much that's interesting in the way of jazz, and Ennio Morricone is more balls-out fun if you're looking for cinematic spaghetti western vibes.
I'm by no stretch a Davis expert, so I'm not sure where this falls in the development of his oeuvre. But I think it kind of stinks.

Grant Green's Green Street has received a lot of play with me this week, this track in particular I've had on something close to continuous repeat:

The first track meanders and kind of goes nowhere. It picks up after that though.doug rr wrote:i just saw this..what the hell is the matter with you?tragabigzanda wrote:I listened to Sketches of Spain last night for the first time in years, and I've got to say I think that record is highly overrated. I have been really into this band lately -- I wish I'd taken note of this recommendation when you first made it! An intoxicating synthesis of jazz, classical piano, and various forms of drum-and-bass music that I don't have the language to describe. But lovely.swan wrote:GoGo Penguin (current favorite)

I've been a big fan of GoGo Penguin ever since their Tiny Desk appearance a few years ago. The drummer is mindblowingly talented.

Nice! Yeah, that rhythm section -- wow. I've been listening to V2/0 and their self-titled album a lot. It's just like a nonstop downpour of unrestrained joy.Ello Sailor wrote:I've been a big fan of GoGo Penguin ever since their Tiny Desk appearance a few years ago. The Dave Brubeck TimeOutTakes that arrived Friday was my first taste of west coast jazz. I loved it from the first note. Very easy to take in.

Real Gone Music has been reissuing albums originally released on the early '70's Black Jazz label -- these two have been getting quite a bit of airtime this past week:

Listened to The Black Saint... twice last night and Ah Um three times so far today. Maybe one day Miles will click harder with me, but at this point in time Mingus is the absolute peak. The best there ever was.

I don't understand how jazz drummers do what they do. It's so foreign to me after a couple years of playing nothing but rock and hip hop beats. I feel as though I'll never get my hi-hat foot steady enough, or my touch light enough. It's probably the most impressive thing in all of music to me.

I can’t imagine Sun Ra being a pleasant listening experience while having guests over. But I haven’t had guests over in like 3 years so wtf do I know.
I’m guessing his really early stuff would be the most crowd pleasing. Holiday For Soul, or Fate in a Pleasant Mood? Before he just went completely interplanetary.

This makes me think of Lanquidity, described on Sun Ra's Bandcamp thusly:tragabigzanda wrote:Please be more specific. Like which ones would you play that are good for company who don’t want to have their faces melted, but are still interesting and engaging for the music connoisseur.
Lanquidity is one of Sun Ra's most popular albums—because it's something of a "pop" effort. Recorded and issued in 1978 on Tom Buchler's short-lived Philly Jazz label, Lanquidity represented a stylistic pivot for Sunny, who had rarely paid much attention to mainstream music trends. Lanquidity, however, is very much of its time, reflecting late-period disco, bottom-heavy funk, and dance-floor soul grooves. Nonetheless, it is very much a Sun Ra album, and steady beats notwithstanding, it's full of surprises, idiosyncrasies, and uncommon moves.
