that was a dumb finale. Perhaps the 8 months off didn't do it any favors.

When does the next season start?

I haven't watched this since they were fighting with Negan. Is it worth picking up and trying to catch up, or did I make the right move bailing?

All they say is early 2021. These will just be new, "extra" live-action episodes. Series writer Kevin Deiboldt describes them as "in-between-quels."
Showrunner Angela Kang told Insider they will feature Aaron, Carol, Daryl, Negan, Maggie, the Commonwealth, and more.

Imagine my surprise to see a new episode of The Walking Dead on my dvr.
Huh?
It was a holiday (Christmas) themed, Zoom packed Talking Dead that was burned off at midnight on Wednesday, January 13th.
It really was nothing. Nothing.
Six new episodes start February 28. They were described as “character episodes” so my guess they’re stand alone or backstory type shows with a minimal cast and relatively little walker action. Of course the walker sequences are pretty much the only reason I still watch.
