I think Mike and Dave was a better dumb movie than Neighbors.

The drop-off in quality from the Best Picture favorites in 2020 to the Best Picture favorites in 2021 is unreal, even assuming that the pandemic played a role.

The names I keep seeing are Nomadland, Minari, Chicago Seven, Mank, Ma Rainey, Promising Young Woman, Judas and the Black Messiah, a few others. Nomadland, Minari, and Chicago Seven are the consensus favorites. I've not seen Minari but I was hugely underwhelmed by Nomadland and I feel like there's a big gap between this crop and last year, where we had Parasite, The Irishman, Once Upon a Time...

Watched Giant for the first time last night. We watched it in one sitting and I was never antsy or bored or thought about checking my phone or anything like that. There are so many old movies that are 3+ hours that feel shorter than a lot of modern movies that are 90 mins. What the hell is that about?

Parasite is great. I didn't see the Irishman but I can't imagine it's anything other than interminable and up its own ass. Once Upon a Time... is awful. Joker was meh. I did like Little Women and Jojo Rabbit a lot, though.

I guess what I'm saying is that this year seems about on par with last year. The difference being there isn't an obvious, next tier, standout like Parasite. At least, not that I've seen.

Yes, exactly (and by the way, you're dead wrong about The Irishman). Every awards season list has some duds (arguably the majority of Best Picture nominees are forgettable), but ALL of these feel like movies that in five years I'll say, "oh yeah, I think I saw that--don't remember it though."

Which is not to say that movies on the whole are worse this year than last, just a comment on what the awards circles are hyping.

I agree with you Mickey...it seems Nomadland is the big favorite, and yes comparing it to Parasite, The Irishman or Once Upon A time...is crazy, but last year Jo Jo Rabbit was also there and who the fuck remembers that movie now.

But yeah, i agree with you.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I watched it in film school. I remember hating it at the time, felt super hokey, but I'd be down to rewatch it now that I'm not a surly teenager with a hangover
