Last night I watched A Perfectly Normal Family on MUBI, a very austere, very sober Danish drama. The kind of thing I'd usually only watch at a film festival. I enjoyed it, but you really have to be in the mood for it. I really wished that I was at a movie theater, with my attention fully focused on it, no chance of any kind of distraction.

Was your ladyfriend distracting you by rubbing your balls while watching the film?

We took the kids to see Tom & Jerry yesterday.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I agree with this

I liked the movie, it felt like a product of the early 2000s in a good way (its score and aesthetic choices, the super-saturated colors). But I agree that it felt muddled. The very end felt like a weird cop-out; I was getting stoked about it ending on such a downer, ruthlessly cynical note. The comeuppance felt like a "have my cake and eat it too" move by the filmmakers.
absolutely

I'm biased because I love horror and I love the new trend of oppressive monsters receiving their violent comeuppance in a revenge fantasy bloodbath, but that's the way I wish it had gone

there were no trans women in this movie but if there had been, Marla would have 100% revealed herself to be a TERF

there should be a sequel where Dinklage's character turns on his "business partner" and puts together a motley crew of pissed off careworker service users to bleed her dry, but there won't be because the movie writers aren't sure enough about their message and "satire" is too easy a shield for writers who don't have much to say

Yeah I wanna clarify that I actually really liked it. Thematic inconsistency is not a dealbreaker for me

The better question is why you didn’t just stay home and watch it on HBO?

Seriously?

To get out of the house. Kids love the huge screen, too.

There were 10 people at this movie, tops. They still assigned seats which I found hilarious. They also sell popcorn and everything else which I also find hilarious because masks.

The Quake (Sequel to The Wave) - really good. The Norwegians sure know how to do a disaster film

Martha Marcy May Marlene - had its moments, but overall pretty meh

MMMM is one I've had on my list forever. I need to check and see if it's streaming for free anywhere here. Without giving anything away, what underwhelmed you about it?

It just didn't really seem to go anywhere. Probably wasn't helped by my wife mostly tuning out and then complaining about it periodically

Gotcha. It's never fun when the spouse isn't into the movie.

I saw in the 50/50 challenge thread you watched Giant.

It’s a great movie but what’s weird about it?

Little Things with Denzel Rami and Jared Leto was pretty good,

I didn’t pick the twist at the end

The character motivations. The way some things are over explained and others are just thrown out there and under developed. Some of the performance choices. Action beats. Etc.
