I know, not exactly what I wanted to hear. I was hoping for something more along the lines of Present Tense, a little dark, expansive and atmospheric.

I remember someone comparing it to 'Muddy Water' by Lanegan, and now this.

Dear God. I haven't even heard 'Muddy Water' by Lanegan, but I can imagine that feel.

Uh, yeah, that's kind of nothing like Sirens.

How about Yellow Moon, then?

So is there anyone who likes all 6-7 tracks we've heard so far? I keep reading people saying this album is going to be great but I don't feel it with less than half I've heard doing anything for me.

I'm a sucker for "dark" country storytelling songs (for some reason, I always call them Country Death Songs). Johnny Cash's darker stuff, some of Tom Waits' stuff (well, ALL of Tom Wait's stuff, but not all of it is particularly country). That Lanegan song hits exactly the right spot. Pearl Jam could do a great country death song, but from the REM/twangy description, Yellow Moon won't be it. I'm less excited about the last few songs now. Present Tense props up the back half of No Code just enough for it to be my favourite album.

I like everything, but I'm still scratching my head wondering what'll eventually happen to Sirens and I was somewhat blinded by the performance to begin with. But I still listen to it a lot, so I guess I really like it. Probably.

Yeah, but I distinguish those songs from songs like "Ain't No Grave", his cover of "Hurt", "God's Gonna Cut You Down", and to a lesser extent, "Ghost Riders". Obviously there's some twang to all country, but I think if it's obvious enough to mention it's probably not going to be as dark as I'd like.

But even moreso than the mentioned twang, is the REM name drop. REM doesn't suggest "dark" to me.

I quite like all the songs so far (maybe not fd). I love Lbolt and mym, and swallowed whole is right on the cusp

Well, I would be one who likes all the songs so far with the exception of FD which I was somewhat indifferent to. Given that I'm yet to hear the studio version, it might rise a bit but not dramatically. I did like the soundboard better.

I loved Getaway, MYM, Sirens and LB. Liked LTRP and Swallowed Whole a lot. The tracks I have high expectations from now are Infallible, Pendulum, Yellow Moon and MFS. SBM could be something I consider acceptable but not much more.

Basically, if the remaining tracks live up to my expectations, LB will replace Backspacer as my #4. The top three are set in stone: Vitalogy, Ten & Vs.

So far this is bottom of the pile. The remaining tracks will have to be incredible for it to pip even BS at this stage.

For me the insurmountable threshold is probably Vs. Riot Act and S/T are easily surpassed, Backspacer a little less so, then Binaural and Ten are unlikely, but possible.
