As I see it, the difference between Annie and Beck is that Annie has never presented St. Vincent as her authentic self. At least, not that I've seen -- or rather, not to a degree that feels like a con or disingenuous. She's constantly in character and she's always up front about that. Who her character is changes with each album. Each album is a play. And Annie is cast as a different lead in each new play. It doesn't come across as forced quirkiness to me. It's theater.

In interviews when she drops the latest St. Vincent character and lets Annie talk, she comes across as intelligent, thoughtful, curious, and nerdy in an endlessly endearing way. At least to me. She's guarded and protected, sure, but I can relate to that too. And I don't have the added pressures/problems of being a public figure. Or an attractive woman in an historically dangerous, masculine space.

I...honestly can't think of a description that would make me less likely to listen to her music.

Well it wasn't meant as a selling point, champ. You're either into it or you're not.

Though, I will say, of all our taste differences, this is the one that surprises me the most. I get why you don't like a lot of the artists I like. But I'm genuinely surprised that you don't like STV.

Not that I really put any stock in that critique, whether in the case of Beck volleying between genres or St. Vincent's overt theatrically. Personally, none of those things really give any indication whether something is or is not authentic, though that's probably a different conversation entirely.

"Mutations" is a fantastic album and anybody on the fence about Beck should check it out.

Maybe because it was recorded live over a two week period?

He seems to think it was a tossed off contract filler. What a crock.

Mutations is easily my second favorite Beck record and one of only three that I revisit with any regularity.

But I find the whole "on this album I'm actually a character" thing nauseatingly twee, far too close to musical theater and generally poorly conceived. I have no taste for it, whether it's being done by Kanye West or David Bowie.

I'll use this as an opportunity to state the Unpopular Music Opinion that musical theater is fucking great, and the boring "I hate musicals" take makes me roll my eyes just as much as "I listen to everything except country and rap." Some of the greatest songs ever written are showtunes

Bringing Down The Horse is one of the best albums of the 90s

I listened to that album a ridiculous number of times back in the day. I always thought the track sequence, quieter tune followed by a more upbeat one and repeat, always worked well.

Breach was a good album too. Hand Me Down and Murder 101. Bangers.

Listened to Rebel, Sweetheart the other day and while I don't enjoy it as much as Red Letter Days it's not a poor effort. Don't think I ever gave Glad All Over much of a listen come to think of it.
