I listened to that album a ridiculous number of times back in the day. I always thought the track sequence, quieter tune followed by a more upbeat one and repeat, always worked well.
verb_to_trust wrote:Breach was a good album too. Hand Me Down and Murder 101. Bangers.
Listened to Rebel, Sweetheart the other day and while I don't enjoy it as much as Red Letter Days it's not a poor effort. Don't think I ever gave Glad All Over much of a listen come to think of it.
When the bald guitar player left after Breach they lost their identity as a band. His slide guitar became a key part of their sound. Rebel, Sweetheart has Beautiful Side of Somewhere, which is a good song, but even tries to ape that signature lead guitar from Bringing Down The Horse and Breach a bit.

At least, not that I've seen -- or rather, not to a degree that feels like a con or disingenuous. She's constantly in character and she's always up front about that. Who her character is changes with each album. Each album is a play. And Annie is cast as a different lead in each new play. It doesn't come across as forced quirkiness to me. It's theater.

In interviews when she drops the latest St. Vincent character and lets Annie talk, she comes across as intelligent, thoughtful, curious, and nerdy in an endlessly endearing way. At least to me. She's guarded and protected, sure, but I can relate to that too. And I don't have the added pressures/problems of being a public figure. Or an attractive woman in an historically dangerous, masculine space.
I...honestly can't think of a description that would make me less likely to listen to her music.
Well it wasn't meant as a selling point, champ. You're either into it or you're not.

Though, I will say, of all our taste differences, this is the one that surprises me the most. I get why you don't like a lot of the artists I like. But I'm genuinely surprised that you don't like STV.

Ah well. Tis what tis.
I actually don't dislike St. Vincent, though I haven't had any interest in her project since Strange Mercy (which I really enjoyed!). But I find the whole "on this album I'm actually a character" thing nauseatingly twee, far too close to musical theater and generally poorly conceived. I have no taste for it, whether it's being done by Kanye West or David Bowie.
That makes sense. And I think draws the first concrete boundary between our tastes.
I'll use this as an opportunity to state the Unpopular Music Opinion that musical theater is fucking great, and the boring "I hate musicals" take makes me roll my eyes just as much as "I listen to everything except country and rap." Some of the greatest songs ever written are showtunes
Please take your disgusting desire for narrative out of my affect-driven art form, thanks.

I would argue this even extends to cringe bullshit like the "mamasan trilogy."

I'm not sure what to do with this dumb post except advise you not to look at Punisher's lyrics too closely

How fringe is the idea "musical theater is good, actually" in a world where Hamilton exists?

Please give examples
Summertime
Memory
Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered
Anything Goes
Ring of Keys
Aquarius
Children Will Listen
Tonight
Literally all of Hamilton

Those are just off the top of my head. There are a ton more.

I heard a four second clip from Hamilton on NPR in 2016 and it was one of the most skin-crawling experiences I've ever had. I'm still trying to delete it from my brain.

Memory is on that list above.

Also, Cats is a terrible musical that I hate with my whole being. One of my best friends starred in the recent Broadway revival and I still couldn't bring myself to see it. She even offered comps! Couldn't do it.

To think I used to feel bad that our tastes didn't overlap more.

You should try to get back to that place.

I have also had close to zero exposure to Hamilton and believe I am the better for it.
