Huh. First moment of hesitation for me in these early matchups.

Think I'm going with Hard Sun. I never think of either of these as favorites, but trying to pick one over the other is making me appreciate each.

Re: 13. Hard Sun vs. Undone
Yeah this is really really hard. I think these are both just about 5 star songs. Undone is my second favorite song from the Binaural/Riot Act era (behind only I am Mine). But Hard Sun is amazing, and the vocal passage from about 2:12 to 2:32 is one of my favorite moments in his entire career. He can still do this (it's what makes Retrograde worth the price of admission) and it boggles the mind that this isn't a staple (it is exactly what is missing from the chorus of Amongst the Waves, for instance). I guess if Undone came on shuffle I might occasionally skip it. I will never skip Hard Sun. Gets my vote.

If Hard Sun was an original then it's probably an easy vote. Since it isn't, that gave me a moment of pause. But it is great.

yeah, this one was difficult. I choose Hard Sun because its such a good cover. He really went for it.
Undone is still a very good song.

Voting for Undone because it's Pearl Jam. Although, like Felicity's Surprise vs. Alive, I probably prefer the former in both matchups.

Re: 13. Hard Sun vs. Undone
Undone is a song that's always just been, for lack of a better word, there. It's not bad, it's pleasant enough, and I've moved on the second it's over. It was the right choice to leave it off Riot Act and perfect as a kind of back-album curiosity for something like Lost Dogs, where all it has to do is be a pleasant listen and not have any more responsibility than that.
Hard Sun remains one of the very few songs from ITW I return to with any consistency. I feel like Eddie captures something here that he tried to return to constantly for the next several records, with far poorer results. Why PJ have never claimed this track for themselves when they've done so with one or two other iTW tracks is very surprising to me.

It is. The original performer sued him I think. His version is not very good.Bammer wrote:Hard Sun is a cover?

If I remember correctly, the judge threw out the law suit and in his opinion noted that the artist actually made more money off Eddie Vedder’s version and it lifted his public profile rather than what the lawsuit claimed.

Hard Sun
Probably my toughest decision so far as I do enjoy Undone quite a bit.

Re: 13. Hard Sun vs. Undone
I'm sentimental about both of these.
The I Am Mine CD single was the first PJ music I owned in physical form.
I grew up downloading music on Napster and Kazaa and all that and, being 12 years old or whatever at the time, buying music just wasn't something I did.
However, on a family trip to Austin we checked out Waterloo Records and I was super excited to find PJ songs I hadn't heard before.
Waterloo was ontop of it carrying the Australian digipak import with I Am Mine, Down, Bu$hleaguer, and Undone.
I don't remember anything about taking the SAT itself, but I vividly remember listening to Hard Sun as I got dressed the morning of the test.
Powerful song.
The Water On The Road version is cool.
I gotta go with Undone between the two.
