Probably the second-best example of a PJ re-recording completely ruining a great memory of a track (Driftin' being the first). I can't unhear the Footsteps harmonica.

I don't mind the harmonica, but it works much better live. I actually really like it in driftin'

Footsteps is an amazing vocal performance from Eddie in a song I just can't really take seriously anymore, at least not the studio version. Live I think it still works quite well.

I think I might give this to Inside Job. Footsteps is the better song, but there is a grandiose charm to Inside Job (especially knowing how personal the song is to Mike), and I am much less likely to skip it then footsteps. The hushed feel of the first part of the song is pretty good, and the second half where the energy picks up is fun, though curiously muted given how bombastic the rest of the album is.

The PJ sub-reddit really likes Inside Job. Diss it at your own down-vote peril. To be fair, diss anything PJ related at your own down-vote peril there really.

Vote for Footsteps.

Voting for Inside Job. It has its problems, but there are things about it that I adore. Footsteps has lost some of its power over the years, at least as I sit here right now this year.

Huh. Seems like the community is coming around in Inside Job. That's fun to see.

Inside Job

I heard this song with new ears when going through rehab six years ago. I very deeply felt it in that moment, and I've felt immensely attached to it ever since. It was this mix of desperation and hope that it seemed to tap into within me at that time.

That connection was further cemented a couple years ago when I happened to be in Seattle for two days and ran into McCready. He took the time to talk to me for about ten minutes, and we talked about some issues surrounding our substance abuse, including selling gear to help support those habits and how it can all still be difficult years after rehab. It meant a lot to be able to thank him for helping me out during that time in my life. Unbelievably nice guy and he gave me a pick he had on him before he left. It feels like my version of a sobriety coin.

Cool story, but not able to sway my vote.

Mike's writing hasn't connected with me since Binaural.
