This is almost enough to get me to listen to it tonight.

 that's pretty dumb, but ill take the boost in my fan club number
Wasn't Ten full of classic commercial rock athems? I am confused by the reaction to this song much more than the song.
If Alive wasn't on Ten lets say State Of Love was in its place, and Alive was the first song we heard on Lightning Bolt what would the reaction to that be.
"Of course your glad your alive you rich fu- wait did he just say he fucked his mother? Cool solo though"

It's pretty much split, 50/50, but there were one or two posts that said they were revoking their memberships, not going to any more tours, and not coming back to the forum, after 22 years of fandom. Not just because of this song, but this was the final trigger. So basically, this might be the song that makes the Pit much less sycophantic from this point on.

So even if you hate the song, you're a winner in the end.

Also, I liked the word sycophant a lot more when I thought Phoebe Buffay made it up.

I don't think it's fair but it's easily found if you search the Sirens threads.

I think the song is bland as fuck, with unmemorable music and with production that doesn't suit the band or help the song and the vocal melody is straight up radio pop ballad. I also hate the hear the sirens intro and the let me catch my breath blah blah bit.

Initially I was pretty disappointed because I can't really see much to the song other than it being an attempt at a wide appeal audience friendly single, but eh, lifes too short, they're just a band, I dunno why I was holding them up as some bastion of musical integrity that I had invented. Don't like this song, hope I like the ones that are left.

see, I totally see that and can even imagine myself agreeing, but then why do I keep going back to it?

One of the reason why this songs kind of works is the band's past history, if that makes any sense. If this is a first album song nobody here really takes it seriously. But because this band also wrote shit like Blood, Deep, Immortality, etc, there's a sense that if Eddie can get to this place he may have actually earned it instead of just singing about it to make dollars.

So the band history that leads lots of people to hate this song is also the reason why it actually has some legitimacy.

I'm not sure what that says about the song itself.

yeah, but why this song over everything else? You've read enough of my crap here to know that I am not drawn to everything. Shit, Ole got like 10 listens and that was it. Sirens time is time I could be spending listening to lightning bolt, or the new mark lanegan album.

well you're right in that I certainly don't doubt its authenticity. I don't think this sounds like a cash grab.

Because it is catchy as fuck. They pulled of the whole radio ballad thing. Certain parts of the vocals get stuck in your head real easily. However its also pretty forgettable once you go a few days without listening to it I think.

Also ed does sound good and its nice hearing him go for broke and pretty much pull it off

Either that or deep down you just really like the song. It happens

yeah he definitely means it. it's kind of nice to hear somebody who's struggled a lot in a comfortable resting place for a while. truth is i think it's nice to remember there can be moments of peace even during difficult periods of life, and i think this song can do that.

It's resonating with stuff in my personal life, that's the crux of it. If I couldn't relate at all, it would do nothing for me. But I can. That's something that you don't question when you're 11 and hearing "Black" for the first time. You just go with the feeling. But I'm 31 so it's very easy to argue myself out of feeling impacted. Ultimately, though, I do. And it's very little to do with the fact that the formulaic aspects of this song pull on the heart strings. I'm aware of the parts that try too hard to emotionally manipulate, and to be honest I think they let the song down.

I'm pretty sure there are people who don't want to hear about how comfortable and content Ed is though, being the millionaire rock star he is, and I respect that.
